1 ArcWorks Process Improvement P08008
Project Lead: Eric Meinecke (ISE) SD1 start: Winter SD2 start: Spring Thursday, September 06, 2018

2 Project Review Objective: Develop a method by which the bottle top assembly can be assembled faster and with less ergonomic stress on the user. Also analyze and correct any supply chain issues. Primary/ Secondary Stakeholders: Arc Works of Monroe County, Nelgene Nunc, ISE department, ME department, senior design team Staffing Requirements: 3-4 MEs & 1-2 ISEs Past senior design teams: P07008 and P06208 Budget: $1,500(funded by NSF Grant) Thursday, September 06, 2018

3 Task being looked at The goal of this project is to automate the task below with multiple assemblies being performed simultaneously. Thursday, September 06, 2018

4 Current Methods of Assembly
Closures are placed in the bottom fixture and adaptors are placed in the top fixture of one of two style manual presses. Thursday, September 06, 2018

5 Past Senior Design Projects
The past design in this area created a slow pneumatic process to assemble these parts Thursday, September 06, 2018

6 Three Week SD1 Plan Person Week 1 Tasks Week 2 Tasks Week 3 Tasks
ISE 1 Meet with team prior to SD1 to go over PRP. Meet with customer again, finalize week 2 assignments Finalize project plan of action for SD1. Finalize week three assignments. Familiarize self with assembly line design, and study tracking methods. ISE 2 Meet with customer. Understand the process. Review Project Readiness Package. Read through project from two years ago and how it works. Obtain force required to effectively assemble parts for current method. Obtain force for approx 10 assemblies and find mean, std. dev. This is needed to obtain a large enough sample size (n=30) Understand the downfalls of the manual way to assemble in terms of Ergonomics. Help the ME's in finding design flaws for the automatic machine. Analyze the current flow of material, and document this flow. The use of the product flow will be integrated into process improvements later in the Senior Design process. ME 1 Draw top assembly in PRO-E (or other 3D design program) to refresh PRO-E (or other 3D design program) skills. Develop design concept sketch on how the machine should look like . 7 Three Week SD1 Plan Person Week 1 Tasks Week 2 Tasks Week 3 Tasks ME 2
Meet with customer. Understand the process. Review Project Readiness Package. Read through project from two years ago and how it works. Obtain force required to effectively assemble parts for current method. Obtain force for approx 10 assemblies and find mean, std. dev. This is needed to obtain a large enough sample size (n=30) Research simultaneous production methods, where by the same assembly happens concurrent with itself. Develop design concept sketch on how the machine should look like. ME 3 Meet with customer. Understand the process. Review Project Readiness Package. Read through project from two years ago and how it works. Study pneumatic theory, to familiarize with using pneumatics in manufacturing environment. Continue studying pneumatics and use other team members force results to begin designing the load requirements for the pneumatic parts. Look in to different pneumatic presses that have sufficient power to complete assemblies. Find cost on these presses. ME 4 Meet with customer. Understand the process. Review Project Readiness Package. Read through project from two years ago and how it works. Talk with supervisor to get more in-depth on draw backs of project from two years ago. Research material options for design and document material properties. This will be used when designing product. Look in to different on-off devices that incorporate e-stops. 8 Team Values and Norms Additional Values/Norms AWARENESS
This project requires team members to be conscientious about who they are working for The workers have various disabilities and the high respect must be shown, as well as maturity. A lack of maturity will not be tolerated. Thursday, September 06, 2018

9 Grading For SD1 and SD2 Thursday, September 06, 2018

10 Required Resources Thursday, September 06, 2018

11 Identify Customer Needs
Thursday, September 06, 2018

12 Target Specifications
Units Importance Comply to OSHA Specifications Time to failure of tool Number of defects created Operator touching parts during assembly Number of top sizes accepted Setup time for different size tops Force required to perform task Takt time Can visually tell stage of production of any part Provide Process instructions for product Can count number of assemblies Yes/No # Parts till failure # defects Yes/ No # of tops accepted Seconds Newton's 9 3 3 9 9 3 9 3 9 3 3 Thursday, September 06, 2018

13 Risk and Concerns Addressing the needs of each disability
Being able to replicate disabilities when testing the tool in SD2. Pneumatics is still something that needs to be looked at. Thursday, September 06, 2018

14 Outstanding Items Schedule appointment for SD team to have a walk through at ArcWorks during first week of SD1. Thursday, September 06, 2018
