3 8/30/2018 Introducing Power Map Power Map is a new add-in for Excel to interactively visualize spatial data in 3D Requires a tabular data model, including a Power Pivot data model Animated tours can be created and played in the Excel client or exported to MP4 video Static images can be copied to the clipboard A soundtrack can be added to the video Power Map is a new add-in for Excel that allows creating visual tours of geospatial data, in animated form, in 3D. Like Power Query, this add-in is available in preview. © 2012 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. 5 Introducing Power Map System Requirements Supported Operating Systems:
8/30/2018 Introducing Power Map System Requirements Supported Operating Systems: Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2008 R2 Office versions: Office Professional Plus 2013 (Preview) Office 365 ProPlus – provides complete featureset DirectX10 graphics card Internet connectivity for Bing maps Available for 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x64) platforms The selection must match the architecture of the installed version of Office The system requirements for Power Map are itemized on this slide. Note that video rendering can be time consuming and processor intensive. Note that the Office 2013 preview add-in does not include the latest features of filtering and custom maps © 2012 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. 6 Preparing the Data Model for Power Map
8/30/2018 Preparing the Data Model for Power Map Power Map does not surface hierarchies The data model can be prepared to fully exploit the Power Map experience by: Ensuring that columns used as hierarchy levels are visible Ensuring that the Date column from the data model Date table is visible This will allow the time animation to be configured Preparing the data model for Power Map may de-optimize the experience for other reporting and analytic tools Consider creating a data model dedicated to Power Map work To fully exploit the Power Map capabilities it may be necessary to prepare the data model, which may require de-optimizing it for other experiences (Power View, etc.). The lab in this presentation will do this. © 2012 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. 7 Introducing Power Map Power Map Ribbon
8/30/2018 Introducing Power Map Power Map Ribbon The Power Map Window allows creating and managing a single tour Tours consist of scenes, and scenes can be configured with layers of data When creating (or managing a tour), the Power Map Window includes all functionality required to create a tour. Ensure that you describe that a workbook can contain zero or more tours, and a tour can contain one or more scenes. Finally, a scene can contain zero or more layers to display data overlaid upon the scene. © 2012 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. 8 Introducing Power Map Development Methodology
8/30/2018 Introducing Power Map Development Methodology Create a workbook and develop a Power Pivot data model, or connect to an external tabular database Create tours, consisting of a sequence of scenes Configure the map and map layout for each scene Introduce layer(s) to visualize data superimposed on each scene Annotate the map with charts, textboxes and legends Configure transition properties between the scenes Produce and share an MP4 video of the tour This slide describes the development methodology required to produce a tour video. © 2012 Microsoft Corporation. 9 Working with Power Map Configuring Scene Settings
8/30/2018 Working with Power Map Configuring Scene Settings A tour connects to a single data model and can defines an ordered set of scenes Each scene represents a map area, and settings allow configuring: Name Time duration And transition effects into the next scene Themes can be applied to the map Tour scenes allow representing a specific map area and configuring producing settings. Themes can also be applied. © 2012 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. 10 Working with Power Map Configuring Layers
8/30/2018 Working with Power Map Configuring Layers A scene can have zero or more layers Each layer relates data via a spatial relationship to a map Spatial relationships can be defined by latitude and longitude, or text labels of spatial locations (city names, country names, zip codes, etc.) which require geocoding by Bing Maps Layers can be filtered with Power Map with Office 365 Data visualization properties allow setting: Type: Column, Bubble, Heat Map, Region Layout fields according to the visualization type Shape types can be configured also (square, triangle, etc.) The Time property allows data visualization animated over time Superimposed upon a scene are layers. Each layer determines how to relate the data fields to spatial properties, and how to represent the data. There are currently four supported types of data visualizations for a layer: Column, Bubble, Heat Map, Region. © 2012 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. 15 Partner Opportunities
8/30/2018 Partner Opportunities Present interactive tours from the desktop Produce and share tours of geospatial videos Videos can be: Enhanced with a soundtrack Embedded into PowerPoint presentations Uploaded to YouTube Added to SharePoint document libraries There is a partner opportunity to produce and embed geospatial video tours. A good example is to overlay spatial data from the business with external data, like weather or temperature. This can help viewers understand relationships between business data and environment, and could help surface or draw conclusions based on two layers of data. Consider asking attendees what opportunities they see based on their experience and customers needs. © 2012 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. 17 Lab 06 Exploring Power Map in Excel 2013
8/30/2018 Lab 06 In this lab, you will use Power Map to produce a tour consisting of four scenes to spatially and temporally present revenue data for the Tailspin Toys operations. You will then embed a video of the tour into a PowerPoint presentation.
