6 NIST FY 2016 Topics - Advanced Sensing for Manufacturing - Biomanufacturing - Cryptography and Privacy - Cyber Physical Systems - Lab to Market - Materials Genome - Quantum-based Sensors and Measurements

7 How to Submit a Proposal to NIST
- Solicitation available at grants.gov (links on and sbir.gov) - Start early Read solicitation and follow instructions - Ask questions 7

8 Proposal Evaluation - Step 1
Those proposals that pass administrative screening are evaluated by NIST subject-matter experts for: The soundness of the technical approach to the proposed research. The likelihood the proposed effort will result in significant results leading to a product within the subtopic. The likelihood the proposed approach will contribute toward the field of study of the subtopic. Qualifications of the proposed principal/key investigators, supporting staff, and consultants as they relate to accomplishing the proposed research effort.

9 Proposal Evaluation - Step 2
Those proposals that are highly ranked in Step 1 are evaluated by a NIST-wide panel for (Phase I only): Economic impact SBIR Program priorities (manufacturing, energy efficiency, woman-owned, minorities, HUBZones, etc). NIST awards are cooperative agreements.

10 NIST SBIR Awards by Year/Phase

11 Success Story – High Precision Devices (Boulder, CO) New Tool for Breast Cancer Screening
The new breast phantom consists of two components. The one at left is designed to provide a standard for measuring proton spin relaxation time, which varies with different kinds of tissue. The one at right provides references for imaging diffusion Photo Credit: NIST/PML
