2. Learning Intention

3. Success criteria
I will work in groups to discuss close- reading questions about “Shakespeare’s World.” I will make inferences about the text, and discuss the era in which Shakespeare lived.

What do you think it is about?
What kind of information is included?
What facts do you already know, which you expect to find in the text?
What are the text features? What do they tell you?

5. After reading Add: Three facts Three details about the text features
Main idea of each section (Put the section subtitle in the Question margin of your Cornell notes)

6. England in Shakespeare’s day
Write a general assessment about the era in which Shakespeare lived
Help:
What years did he live?
What was the political climate?

7. Possible answer
The era in which Shakespeare wrote was a period of relative political stability under Queen Elizabeth I and intense intellectual and cultural activity.

8. Theatre in Shakespeare’s day
How would knowing that a mixed audience was watching his plays affect Shakespeare’s writing?

9. Possible answer
Mixed Audience: Shakespeare would not have been afraid to include allusions to literature, which at least some members of the upper class would have the education to understand. He would have wanted to include comic elements that would appeal to the common people. Shakespeare was probably aware that an interest in good, fast-paced drama and excitement was shared across the whole audience, rich or poor.

10. Impact on language
How did theater in Shakespeare’s time differ from theater today?
Identify the main idea of this section.

11. Possible answer
In Shakespeare’s time, most of the audience stood near the stage instead of siting in orderly rows. The staging was simple, with little scenery and no artificial lighting. Women were not allowed to act. (It was seen as improper.)
Main idea of “Impact on Language:” Shakespeare greatly enriched the English language by including new expressions and words in his writing.
