7 The lipid bilayer allows most small molecules to diffuse in and out but not large or charged molecules.

8 So, if the cell needs these larger or charged molecules to function, how are they able to get through the membrane?

9 The Cell Membrane: It’s not just Lipids, Ya’ll
The Cell Membrane: It’s not just Lipids, Ya’ll. It surrounds the entire cell and also contains special protein and carbohydrate compounds.

10 The Cell Membrane: Proteins perform some very special functions for the cell.

11 Proteins form special pathways or channels for larger particles

12 Facilitate: to make easier or to assist
Diffuse: when molecules move from high to low concentration or with the concentration gradient High Low

13 Facilitated Diffusion: molecules diffuse across a membrane with the help of transport proteins.

14 Facilitated Diffusion

15 Diffusion and Facilitated Diffusion both go with the concentration gradient. (high to low)

16 Moving WITH the concentration gradient (high to low) requires no energy.
*Diffusion, Osmosis and Facilitated Diffusion “Go with the flow”

17 However...sometimes molecules need to move AGAINST the concentration gradient (Low to High)

18 Moving from Low to High concentration DOES require energy…

19 Active Transport:. Larger molecules move through a protein channel
Active Transport: *Larger molecules move through a protein channel *Low to higher concentration *Requires energy.

21 Endocytosis is the process of taking large amounts of material into the cell by means of enfoldings of the cell membrane.

22 Exocytosis forces contents out of a cell when a vacuole fuses with the cell membrane.
