2 Learning Objectives for This Presentation
By the end of this presentation participants will be able to describe A method to successfully implement successfully track Hepatitis B/Hepatitis A vaccine for incarcerated adults and adolescents

3 Background Incarcerated individuals have a high rate of both Hepatitis B and Hepatitis A infection Incarcerated generally will at some time be returned to the outside community Prevention of Hepatitis infection in incarcerated may also decrease incidence in community

4 Background Incarcerated are transient
Difficult to administer 3 dose series Difficult to track doses administered

5 Setting Suffolk County Correctional Facility at Riverhead, NY
Maximum security facility Located in suburban area Houses inmates for terms up to two years Suffolk County Department of Health Services provides medical care

6 Population Inmates are both male and female
Age range 16 years through adulthood Recidivism is high Average daily population 1800 inmates

7 Project Description Nursing and medical staff identified evidence based risk for Hepatitis B and Hepatitis A infections in incarcerated population New York State Health Department (NYSDOH) Offered to supply TwinRix (Hepatitis B/Hepatitis A) at no charge

8 Project Description Standing orders for nurses to administer immunizations Policy of SCDHS Follows policy of New York State Department of Education-Board of Nursing Nursing staff developed and implemented program to administer and track immunizations

13 Results/Lessons Learned
Successful immunization program was implemented Inmates were provided with at least one dose of TwinRix Vaccine series was completed in many cases before inmates were released Series was completed during subsequent incarcerations

14 Results/Lessons Learned
All inmates who receive Hep B/Hep A are educated regarding the importance of follow-up to complete series Immunization cards are given to inmates following immunization Includes next scheduled dose Empowers inmates to be responsible for their health following release from correctional facility Documentation that they have received vaccine
