2 Basic Facts New Zealand is an island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean it’s situated in the Southern Hemisphere it’s separated from the rest of the world population is about 4,2 million inhabitants it was one of the last lands settled by humans

4 Geography it consists mainly from two islands – the North Island and the South Island and lots of other smaller islands its neighbours are Australia to the east across the Tasman Sea and New Caledonia, Fiji and Tonga to the north

5 Geography II the North Island and the South Island are separated by the Cook Strait the Southern Alps are found on the South Island and their highest peak is Mount Cook the North Island is less mountainious but is marked by volcanism the largest lake is Lake Taupo

6 History NZ was discovered by Dutch explorer Abel Tasman (he met the natives called Maoris) 1769 – British explorer James Cook mapped New Zealand’s coastline – the colonization began 1788 – Arthur Philip claimed NZ as a part of New South Wales

7 History II 1840 – the Treaty of Waitangi is a treaty signed by the British Crown and various Maori chiefs – recognized Maori ownership of their lands and other properties and gave them the rights of British subjects 1893 – NZ became the first country in the world that grant the women the right to vote

8 History III 1907 – NZ became a British dominion
1947 – NZ adopted the Statue of Westminster- British Parliament could no more legislate for New Zealand without the consent of New Zealand

9 Politics the capital of the country is Wellington
NZ is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary democracy the head of state is the British Queen Elizabeth II (titled the Queen of New Zealand) the Queen is represented by the Governor-General

10 Politics II the Parliament has only one chamber – The House of Representatives the government is called the Cabinet and the head of the Cabinet is the Prime Minister there are elections held every three years

11 Economy is one of the most developed economies in the world
tourism plays significant role in NZ’s economy sheep breeding and fishing are very important wine production is increasing is very dependent on international trade

12 Nature NZ is famous for its picturesque nature sceneries and its volcanos there are lots of unique animals and plants thanks to its isolation from the rest of the world the symbol of NZ is Kiwi – flightless bird
