1 Understanding the Opioid Epidemic
Linda S. Vail, Health Officer

2 Since 1999, the number of overdose deaths involving opioids (including prescription opioid pain relievers and heroin) nearly quadrupled. From 2000 to 2015 more than half a million people died from drug overdoses. 91 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose.

7 Over a decade and a half, opioid poisonings, intentional and accidental combined, have nearly doubled among children and adolescents ~ JAMA Pediatrics study to be released in 2017

8 Between 1999 and 2010, sales of these “opioid analgesics”—medications like Vicodin, Percocet, and OxyContin—quadrupled.

9

10 In 2007, Purdue Pharma and three of its top executives pleaded guilty to criminal charges that they had misled the F.D.A., clinicians, and patients about the risks of OxyContin addiction and abuse by aggressively marketing the drug to providers and patients as a safe alternative to short-acting narcotics. (Doctors had been taught that because OxyContin was time-released, it wouldn’t cause a high that would lead to addiction.)

11 By 2010, the United States, with about 5% of the world’s population, was consuming 99% of the world’s hydrocodone (the narcotic in Vicodin), along with 80% of the oxycodone (in Percocet and OxyContin), and 65% of the hydromorphone (in Dilaudid).

12 Rx Abuse Prescription painkiller overdoses killed over 17,000 people in the US in 2015. : An average of 1.1 million emergency department visits per year for drug poisoning Nonmedical use of prescription painkiller costs health insurers up to $72.5 billion annually in direct health care costs

18 Fentanyl and Fentanyl Analogs are Driving Death Trends

19 Fentanyl and Fentanyl Analogs
2014 16.2% of all drug deaths involved fentanyl/analog(s) 20.7% of opioid deaths involved fentanyl/analog(s) 2015 26.1% of all drug deaths 33.3% of opioid deaths 2016 32.4% of all drug deaths 37.1% of opioid deaths 2017 (YTD) 38.6% of all drug deaths 50% of opioid deaths

22 Carfentanil is a veterinary drug
Carfentanil is a veterinary drug. In fact it is an elephant tranquilizer. An elephant weighs between 5,000 and 14,000 pounds, as reported by National Geographic, which is times the weight of an average male adult (195.5 lbs).

23 Carfentanil in an amount equivalent to one grain of salt is enough
to kill a human being
