1 Honors British Literature
Week 15

2 Class 1: Objectives SWBAT…
Check in with other students reading the same book Review analytical essay structure Review how to incorporate quotations into an essay

3 Second artifacts/explanations
Before you hand these in, get together with the other person/people reading your same book. Discussion topics: What do you like least/most about the book so far? What has confused or challenged you about the book? What have you chosen to focus on with your artifacts? Have you found any connections to other texts from this class?

4 Analytical Essay Structure: Basics
Paragraph #1: Introduction Some background information Include author’s name and title of book Thesis statement (needs to be arguable!) Paragraphs #2-3: Body Transition phrase/topic sentence Your reasoning in support of your thesis Evidence from the text (quotes and paraphrases) Need at least 2 quotes per mini-essay! Quotes should be sandwiched and have page numbers! Paragraph #4: Conclusion Sum up your argument Leave your audience with a strong impression: they should listen to the argument you just made!

5 Using quotes Sandwiching means you:
Give the speaker and the context of the quote Connect the quote to the point you are making

6 Using Quotes: Example My point: The Time Traveller eventually realizes that the Eloi are not controlling the Morlocks. Quote: “These Eloi were mere fatted cattle, which the ant-like Morlocks preserved and preyed upon” (62). Quote sandwich: The Time Traveller eventually realizes that the Eloi are not controlling the Morlocks. He explains near the end of his visit to the future, “These Eloi were mere fatted cattle, which the ant-like Morlocks preserved and preyed upon” (62). The Morlocks are actually in control, raising the Eloi for food.

7 Using Quotes: Your turn
Your point: Jekyll struggles with the two sides of his personality long before he can separate them with the drug. Quote: “When I reached years of reflection, and began to look around me, and take stock of my progress, and position in the world, I stood already committed to a profound duplicity of life” (42). Quote sandwich?

8 Using quotes: your essays
Look at your quotes and the point you are using them to make. How will you incorporate them into your body paragraphs?

Improves audience understanding and memory Serves as notes Provides clearer organization Facilitates more eye contact and motion by the speaker Contributes to speaker credibility

15 Visual Aid Tips Stand to the side of the visual aid.
Maintain eye contact. A SPEAKER SHOULD NEVER TURN THEIR BACK TO AN AUDIENCE. Introduce a visual aid before talking about the information contained in it. Practice with your visual aid. Make sure the visual aid supports and enhances the message. It should not distract from your speaking. Point out key elements in the visual aid, especially if it is complicated.
