Provide choice whenever possible
Consider who your students are and what interests and excites them
When possible, write curriculum with specific goals in mind but leave room for choice in texts, materials, methods, genres, content, assessments, etc. (i.e. mentor text might be a poem that uses imagery and rhyme schemes, but the content of the poem can be something that interests your particular students)
