1 Design Process From idea to product

2 Design Process When creating a new product there are 3 main steps that you have to go through: Design Production Marketing

3 Step 1: Design

4 Step 1: Design First part of the design cycle is designing your product This includes determining: The need for your product Why do we need this? What purpose does it serve? Who your target audience is Who would use the product? If your product is already on the market Does something like my product already exist? If so, how will mine be different?

5 Step 1: Design From there you’ll need to:
Write up a plan for building your product (Specifications) Draw a detailed drawing of your product (Technical drawing) Build your product

6 Specifications What exactly do specifications include?
The purpose of the product Its effects on: People using it Environment Costs Materials used Basically the specifications are all the details that you need to think of before making your product and selling it

7 Technical Drawing Once you have figured out all the details for the specifications you need to figure out exactly how your product will look You will produce a technical drawing: A detailed drawing that lets anyone else looking at it know exactly what your product should look like

8 Technical Drawing Technical drawings include: Exact measurements
3 different views because objects don’t always look the same from every angle: Top Front Right side

9 Prototype Once you know what you want to build and how you’re going to build it, you need to actually BUILD it! The first version of your product that you make is called the prototype

10 Prototype Once you have a prototype you need to analyze it:
Does it work? Does it do everything you want it to do? Could it be better? If you’re happy with your product you move on to marketing If not, you restart the design process and make a new prototype

11 Step 2: Production

12 Production The production part of the design cycle includes:
Figuring out how to make your product on a large scale Where will the product be made? Where will you get your resources? Actually going into production and making the product Writing instructions on how to use the product

13 Step 3: Marketing

14 Marketing Once the product is ready, you need to be able to get people to buy it How will you promote/advertise your product? Where will it be sold? How much will it cost? You also need to figure out how it will be disposed of: Will it be recycled? If so, where?

15 Let’s Try Designing

16 Challenge: In teams of 3-4, you must create a chair/table that can hold the most amount of weight using ONLY newspaper and some tape. It must be able to hold the weight at least 10cm off the ground Each team will be given a few sheets of newspaper Tape You can only use the tape sparingly
