2. What is Influenza?
Influenza, or “the flu” is a highly contagious viral infection of the respiratory tract- that would be your nose throat and lungs
The Flu has basic symptoms like cough, sore throat, and stuffy/runny nose
The day you get infected is not the day any symptoms appear
You know you have the flu when you experience most of the symptoms
There are tests at the doctor’s office that can be run to know if you are infected

3. History of Influenza
The highest known killing flu is the “Spanish flu” ( )
It killed 500,000 people in the US and 20 million people all over the world
The “Asian flu” killed 70,000 people in the US( )
The “Hong Kong flu” killed 34,000 in the US( )
Influenza comes from the Italian word Influenza- meaning influence
People in the early 15th century blamed the flu on the stars, moon, and sun

4. Influenza Symptoms Extreme tiredness Chest discomfort Cough
Stuffy or runny nose
Headache
Scratchy sore throat
Fever higher than 101 degrees farenheit
Symptoms usually come on slowly and within the first few days of contracting the virus

5. Who is Most Susceptible to the Flu?
People with weak immune systems are more likely to get the Flu
These people include, infants, the elderly, people who have HIV/AIDS, and those who are pregnant
Everyone can get the Flu it is really only a matter of how well you immune system functions

6. Treatment for Influenza
Nasal decongestants, cough suppressants, are an over-the-counter way to fight the flu
Caffeine can also counter the tired feeling you get
Aspirin also helps lower fever
Antacids taken after aspirin because aspirin sometimes causes stomach upset
Antihistamines stop things like sneezing runny nose and watery eyes

7. How is the Flu Spread?
A person who is infected can spread the flu from 6 feet away
The disease can be spread from cough, sneeze, and talk
Touching an object touched by an infected person can also make you sick
An infected person can spread the flu from the moment they feel sick to the moment the virus leaves their body

8. A New Vaccine A new vaccine was created to stop the flu called Flublok
Hemagglutinin is the star ingredient in this new vaccine
Most antibodies are directed toward the hemagglutinin which is in a majority flu viruses
Only approved for adults 18-49
The use of hemagglutinin allows faster production
