2 Population, Religions & Language
The population of America in 2010 was about 300 million people. It has the world’s third largest population after China & India. It is the most diversified population in the world in terms of ethnicity, cultural backgrounds, languages and religion.

3 The dominant ethnic groups among early settlers were the English & Irish.
78% of Americans are Christians, 1% are Muslims, 1% are Jews. On the other hand, 10% practice other religions, while 10% have got no religion. About 82% of the population speak English. The literacy rate among the Americans is almost 100%.

4 Native Americans Native Americans constitute about 2 million people. Many of the native Americans died before the year 1920 due to wars and diseases. The Native Americans taught the European settlers how to Cultivate crops, such as corn, tomatoes, potatoes and tobacco. They also invented canoes, snowshoes and moccasins.

5 Statue of Liberty During the 19th century, many people entered the United States. As a result, the government operated a special port on Ellis Island. This port is preserved as part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument. The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to the Americans in 1886.

6 Unwilling immigrants The group of immigrants who came unwillingly to North America were the Africans. The Africans were brought over as slaves. They were working in the fields until 1808 when importing slaves became illegal.

7 Dr. Martin Luther King African Americans suffered from segregation and inferior education for along time. Dr. Martin Luther King and others protested to demand equal treatment under the law and end racial discrimination.
