Improving data quality and availability 143. Data of good quality are vital in order to make informed decisions and to ensure accountability for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. Tracking progress on the SDGs requires the collection, processing, analysis and dissemination of an unprecedented amount of data and statistics at the subnational, national, regional and global levels, including those derived from official statistical systems and from new and innovative data sources. 147. New data sources and technologies for data collection will need to be explored, including through partnerships with civil society, the private sector and academia. The integration of geospatial information and statistical data will also be essential for the production of a number of indicators. Positioning geospatial information to address global challenges

Inter-agency Expert Group on SDG Indicators Disaggregation by Geographic Location Established by IAEG-SDGs in April Reports to the IAEG-SDGs and UN-GGIM. Provide expertise and advice as to how geospatial information, Earth observations and other new data sources can reliably and consistently contribute to the indicators. Review and enhance the agreed global indicators and metadata through a ‘geographic location’ lens. Identify existing geospatial data gaps, methodological and measurement issues to augment and improve the production process of statistical data. Propose strategies for undertaking methodological work on specific areas for improving disaggregation by geographic location concepts. Positioning geospatial information to address global challenges

7 Reviewed global indicators through a ‘geographic location’ lens.
Geospatial information is able to provide enabling methodologies and processes for disaggregation. Disaggregation of national statistical data is considerably strengthened through the lens of geospatial information. Agreed to the formation of 6 task teams, 3 focused on working through 3 identified indicators, namely Indicator 6.6.1, and (water, rural population and land). 3 task teams sought to address 3 identified cross-cutting issues: data disaggregation by geographic location; alternative data sources; and international (global) datasets. Goal is to help identify & support methods using Earth observations that can be adopted by NSOs for indictors For Earth observations for the extent of water related ecosystems are available for helping to measure extent For the global community is working to develop methods with common definitions and sufficient data resources Positioning geospatial information to address global challenges
