1 Conceptualization Techniques / Synthesizing the Design

2 IDEATION Brain storming Brain Writing Mind maps Biomimicry / Shape mimicry SCAMPER TRIZ Keep in mind that “ no single technique will be effective for everyone , experiment with different strategies and find that works for you

3 IDEATION Techniques (Generating solutions)
Brain storming The team work on a problem for a limited amount of time. No criticism is allowed with in the amount of time No judgments over ideas with in the time Quantity of ideas is considered but not quality Can be individual or group Keep in mind silly ideas can bring the better solutions some time

4 Keep in mind silly ideas can bring the better solutions some time
Brainstorming Keep in mind silly ideas can bring the better solutions some time

5 Brainwritting In this method the person write his ideas on the sheet of paper and after some time pass it on to the next person . The second person will work on the “ already generated idea”. Method has potential to create very innovative ideas. Has the draw back that there may be a premature criticism.

6 Mind Mapping In this an individual person will visualize his thought process of the specific problem solution. a diagram in which information is represented visually, usually with a central idea placed in the middle and associated ideas arranged around it. The ideas and aspects related to the central theme are found and how the aspects are related are also shown.

8 WHAT IS BIOMIMETICS? Biomimetics is the term used to describe the substances, equipment, mechanism and systems by which humans imitate natural systems and designs.

9 Biomimicry originates from two Greek words
Bios = Life Mimesis= imitate Biomimicry operates on the principle that in its 3.8 billion year history, nature has already found solutions to many problems we are trying to solve. Biomimicry is multi-disciplinary subject involving wide diversity of other domains like architecture, electronics, medicines, biology, chemistry, mathematics etc.

11 SHARKLET TECHNOLOGIES
GECKO TAPE Scientists have used a 3D-printed model of shark skin to show how tooth-like scales help the predators to cruise efficiently. Viewed up close, a shark's skinbristles with tiny teeth or "denticles" which aid swimming. Inspiration Precedence SHARKLET TECHNOLOGIES Inspiration Precedence Textiles Surfaces

12 HOW DID IT BEGIN? American biophysicist and polymath.
Coined the term Biomimetics in 1950’s. Developed Schmitt trigger by studying the nerves in squid. Attempted to engineer a device that replicated the system of nerve propagation. Otto Schmitt ( )

13 There are two approaches to Biomimetic design
APPROACHES TO BIOMIMICRY There are two approaches to Biomimetic design DESIGN BIOLOGY BIOLOGY DESIGN

14 APPROACHES TO BIOMIMICRY
DESIGN TO BIOLOGY The approach requires designers to identify problems and biologists to match these to organisms that have solved similar issues. More fuel efficient due to aerodynamic body mimicking BOX FISH More material efficient due to mimicking tree growth patterns form structure. The car not new approach to transportation but improvement to existing technology DaimlerChrysler’s Bionic Car

15 APPROACHES TO BIOMIMICRY
BIOLOGY TO DESIGN Lotus flower emerges clean from swampy waters. Lotusan paint enables buildings to be self cleaning. Biology can influence humans in ways outside predetermined design problem. This will result in previously unthought-of technologies or systems or approach to design solutions. Lotus inspired’s Lotusan Paint The approach requires to have relevant biological or ecological knowledge and research rather than design problem

16 PRINCIPLES OF BIOMIMICRY
NATURE

17 PRINCIPLES OF BIOMIMICRY
Nature runs on sunlight. Nature uses only the energy it needs. Nature fits form to function. Nature recycles everything. Nature rewards cooperation. Nature banks on diversity. Nature demands local expertise. Nature curbs excesses from within. Nature taps the power of limits

18 NATURE AS A MODEL NATURE AS A MEASURE NATURE AS A MENTOR

19 STEPS TO ADOPT BIOMIMCRY
Evaluate the design against Life’s Principles Biologize the question: ask from nature’s perspective. Develop a design brief of human needs Find the repeating patterns and processes within nature that achieve success Look for champions in nature who solve the challenges Develop ideas and solutions based on the natural model
