1 Welcome to Class 4 Our aims for this session are to inform our parents… about the year 4 curriculum of routines in year 4 1

4 English Reciprocal reading: Will take place 4 times per week, this will include reading comprehension and spelling practise. Spellings: Children will be given weekly spellings on a Friday and the spelling test will take place the following Friday. Would you please assist your child in learning these words and looking up the meanings of any unknown words. There is a bank of commonly mis-spelt words that should be learnt by the end of year 4. This year, we have a new spelling system in place called No nonsense spellings where spelling rules and strategies are taught in 10 minute lessons. Reading books: Children will be given a reading book in school. This should be taken home and brought back into school daily. Please comment and initial when you have heard your child read.

5 English Handwriting: It is a requirement that all children join their handwriting in year 4. We will have handwriting sessions in school each week. As soon as children can join their writing neatly, they will be given a ‘pen licence’ which enables them to write in pen in English lessons.

6 Maths Mr Hamlett- Number and Calculation Mrs Foster- Shape, Space, Measures and Data handling. Mental maths and multiplication tables comprise a central element of the maths curriculum. Under the new curriculum, it is statutory for all children by the end of year 4 to learn their time tables up to 12x12. Children will also need to know the corresponding division facts.

7 Creative Curriculum Topics that will be taught over the year are:
Who were the Romans? Frozen Planet The Lungs of the earth – How does the earth breathe? You Are What You Eat – What’s inside me? Ancient Egypt

8 Homework Children will receive a homework grid each half term.
20 minutes of English and Maths, based on learning from the week. Spellings (to be tested on Friday) Times tables Reading – Please sign Reading journals so books can be changed. Completed homework will be discussed with each child.

9 What do we need and when? Monday: Tuesday:
Wednesday: Ukulele's and P.E Kit Thursday: P.E kit Friday: Homework and spellings given out

10 Uniform and kits School uniform details are on our website. It is most helpful if every item is named. Indoor P.E kit – Shorts and T-shirt. Outdoor P.E kit - A tracksuit and trainers.

11 Trips… We are in the process of arranging trips and visitors to inspire and further our children’s learning
