1 What is Matter? NEED TODAY SCIENCE
We will categorize objects as matter and not matter and size, location and charge of the 3 subatomic particles.

2 AGENDA History of Matter N2: What is Matter
Rotations: Matter vs Not Matter Videos: AIR and WATER are matter History of Atom N2 cont: Subatomic Particles Subatomic Memory Game Videos 5?Quiz: Matter and Subatomic Particles

3 Today we will complete…

4 Presentation Cues No one wants to listen to the teacher the whole time;) Volunteer/Class Discussion – quick answer from raised hand (remember/understand) Pair/share – quick chat with neighbor and volunteer or teacher pick share (remember/understand/apply) Group task – longer time for pair or group to apply, analyze, evaluate or create Individual write – personal reflection on topic Rotations – solve the station with group and write answer on paper, rotate with timer and stay with your group 5?Quiz – quick check for understanding about topic

5 Let’s see what you know…
What is MATTER? What are ELEMENTS? What are ATOMS?

6 Greeks spent a lot of time THINKING about what everything is made of…
Greeks liked to think! Thales (624BCE) – water Anaximander (610BCE) – limitless Anaximenes (585BCE) – air Heraclitus (535BCE) – fire Empedocles (490BCE) – 4 elements – earth, fire, air, water Aristotle (384BCE) – 4 elements plus aether (substance that fills the void above earth) Matter is real because it has form

7 The guys who figured it out…
Each person added a little more to the knowledge of matter Democritus (460BCE) – matter made of small tiny particles Descartes (1596) - matter is a substance, takes up space Newton (1643) - matter has mass, made of impenetrable particles Priestly (1733) – matter has power of attraction

8 Has mass (can be weighed) Has volume (takes up space)
What is Matter? Made of atoms Has mass (can be weighed) Has volume (takes up space) Can be solid, liquid or gas

9 If you can answer “YES” it’s MATTER!
Rotation Stations “Can I weigh it?” “Does it take up space?” If you can answer “YES” it’s MATTER! Make a t-chart in your notebook like below. As you rotate, write the object in the proper category MATTER NOT MATTER

10 Rotation Stations 11 4 At each station, write the name of the object in the MATTER or NOT-MATTER column in your notes. We’ll practice the first 3 together 10 5 6 9 7 8

11 1. Are DOGS matter? Yes Has mass and takes up space

12 2. Are FEELINGS matter? No No mass, doesn’t take up space

13 3. Is PLAY-DOH matter? Yes Has mass and takes up space

14 4. Is LIGHT matter? No No mass, doesn’t take up space - Pure energy -

15 5. Are TOYS matter? Yes Has mass and takes up space

16 6. Is FIRE matter? No No mass, doesn’t take up space - Pure energy -

17 7. Is WATER matter? Yes Has mass and takes up space

18 8. Is SOUND matter? No No mass, doesn’t take up space - Pure energy -

19 9. Is METAL matter? Yes Has mass and takes up space

20 10. Are CHILDREN matter? Yes Has mass and takes up space

21 11. Is AIR matter? Yes Has mass and takes up space
(this one is hard for students to believe – to prove – weigh an empty balloon. Then blow it up and weigh again, the mass will go up (albeit minutely)

22 MATTER NOT MATTER

23 Are Fire and AIR Matter? Crash Course Kids Millsium – Is fire matter?
Millsium – Is fire matter? CramBoom – Air is Matter

24 What are ELEMENTS? Substances which cannot be broken into simpler ones
Each one is made of the same kind of atom

25 Where is information about ELEMENTS located?
Periodic Table tells us about the 118 different kinds of atoms that make up the 118 different elements

26 Is AIR an ELEMENT? NO – NOT ON PERIODIC TABLE
Made of many different kinds of atoms

27 Is CARBON an ELEMENT? YES – ON PERIODIC TABLE
Made of only carbon atoms

28 Is WOOD an ELEMENT? NO – NOT ON PERIODIC TABLE
Made of many different kinds of atoms

29 Is PLASTIC an ELEMENT? NO – NOT ON PERIODIC TABLE
Made of many different kinds of atoms

30 Is OXYGEN an ELEMENT? YES – ON PERIODIC TABLE
Made of only Oxygen (O) atoms

31 Is EARTH an ELEMENT? NO – NOT ON PERIODIC TABLE
Made of many different kinds of atoms

32 Is POTASSIUM an ELEMENT?
YES – ON PERIODIC TABLE Made of only Potassium (K) atoms

33 Now you….

34 Matter is made of atoms! ATOMS are the smallest complete pieces of matter in the universe. Dalton – small sphere Thompson – has positive and negative charges Rutherford – nucleus Bohr – energy levels Schrodinger – electron cloud

35 What is an Atom? Atoms are the smallest whole piece of matter
Two areas: Nucleus – inside Has all the mass Electron Cloud – outside Determines reactivity

36 Draw this under your t-chart...
+ + -

37 3 Subatomic Particles: Proton Neutron Electron Charge Size Location
Use the information from the following slides to complete the table…

38 PROTON Positive charge 2000x larger than electrons Located in Nucleus
- + + - PROTON

39 NEUTRON Neutral charge 2000x larger than electrons Located in Nucleus
- + + - NEUTRON

40 ELECTRON Negative charge 2000x smaller than protons/neutrons
Moves around in Electron Cloud Can leave atom to make new substances - + + - ELECTRON

41 SUBATOMIC MEMORY GAME PLACE ALL CARDS WITH “SUBATOMIC MEMORY” SIDE UP
First student flips 2 cards over If you pick up 2 vocab words, 2 descriptions/pictures OR one of each that doesn’t match = FLIP THEM OVER NEXT STUDENT GOES If there is a VOCAB WORD (PROTON, NEUTRON, ELECTRON) and a picture/description that matches = KEEP THE CARDS GO AGAIN UNTIL YOU GET NO MATCHES WINNER = MOST CARDS Subatomic memory cards should be printed double sided on card stock, cut and placed in baggies Make sure to model how to get a “match” so that they understand how to play Could also be done as a matching game or sort

42 Even though true, not match for game
+ + + + Even though true, not match for game + +

43 Print this slide on back of following 2 slides

44 Print with “SUBATOMIC MEMORY” ON BACK. CUT INTO 12 CARDS

45 Print with “SUBATOMIC MEMORY” ON BACK. CUT INTO 12 CARDS

46 Videos… Just how small is an atom 2400 year search for atom
2400 year search for atom Have students rate their understanding

47 I KNOW HOW TO DETERMINE IF SOMETHING IS MATTER and THE SIZE, LOCATION AND CHARGE OF SUBATOMIC PARTICLES
