3. Auf Blut und Leichen, Schutt und Qualm,
On blood and bodies, rubble and smoke,
Auf rosszerstampften Sommerhalm
On horse trodden summer stalks

The sun shone.
Es sank die Nacht. Die Schlacht ist aus.

4. Ein Junker auch, ein Knabe noch, A cadet too, just a boy
Der heut das erste Pulver roch,
That today smelled the first powder
Er musste dahin.
He had to go.
Wie hoch er auch die Fahne schwang,
No matter how high he swung the flag
Der Tod in seinen Arm ihn zwang,
Death forced him into his arms.

5. Ihm nah lag ein frommes Buch, Near him lay a pious book,
Das stets der Junker bei sich trug,
That the cadet always carried with him
Am Degenknauf.
On the handle of his dagger.
Ein Grenadier von Bevern fand
A grenadier from Bevern found
Den kleinen erdbeschmutzten Band
The small and earth-bespattered volume.
Und hob ihn auf.
And lifted it up.

6. Und brachte heim mit schnellem Fuss
And brought it home with quickened step
Dem Vater diesen letzten Gruss,
This last greeting to the father,
Der klang nicht froh.
It did not sound happy.
Dann schrieb hinein die Zitterhand:
Then wrote within the trembling hand:
“Kolin. Mein Sohn verscharrt im Sand.
“Kolin. My son burried in the sand.
Wer weiss wo?”
Who knows where?”

Und der es liest, im Leben zieht

Noch frisch und froh.
Still brisk and happy.
Doch einst bin ich, und bist auch du,
But someday am I, and also are you,
Verscharrt im Sand zur ewigen Ruh,
Buried in sand to eternal rest
