Preparing for Local TV Station Changes

What is Happening? Soon, many local TV stations must change frequencies – the channels they use to broadcast. TV stations will be making changes at different times starting in through at least the spring of 2020. If you watch TV for free, “over the air” using an antenna, you will need to rescan your TV set.

Why is this Happening? Recently, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) held an auction to reallocate broadcast airwaves to make more room for wireless internet broadband services. Now, the FCC has determined that nearly 1,000 TV stations that did not participate in the auction must change frequencies to make room for wireless internet services.

How Does this Impact Me? If you watch TV “over the air” with an antenna, you will need to rescan your TV sets to continue watching TV for free and receive the critical emergency updates, news and entertainment your local stations deliver. These changes are happening behind the scenes, so the channel numbers you know will not change. You will not need to purchase any new equipment or services. Because TV stations are required to move at different times, you may need to rescan your TV more than once.

What Do I Need to Do? Stay tuned to your local TV stations for information about when they plan to make changes. Rescan your TV set to keep watching your local TV stations for free.

How to Rescan Rescanning your TV set is simple:
Select "scan" or "autotune" from your TV or converter box control menu to start the scanning process. You can usually find instructions by pressing the "set-up" or "menu" buttons on your television or digital antenna remote control.

You can find out when stations in your hometown will be moving channels and instructions on how to rescan at TVAnswers.org.
