1 Calculating Molar Mass

2 What Substance am I activity?
Agenda Info What is Molar Mass?? Molar Mass Practice What Substance am I activity?

3 You Will Need… Periodic Table Calculator Note Sheet

4 Determining How Much we Have of Something
Last Class Understood how many particles are in 1 mole of a substance Today Calculate how many grams of a substance we have in 1 mole AKA: Molar Mass

5 Molar Mass The number of grams in 1 mole of a substance Units: g/mol
Physical property Molar masses are always never measured directly. They may be calculated from standard Atomic Masses found on your Periodic Table

6 Mole and Atomic Mass Connection
A mole is defined as the number of carbon atoms in exactly 12.0 grams of carbon-12 1 mole of carbon = 6.02 x 1023 carbon atoms = grams of carbon Use one decimal place 1 mole = 6.02 x 1023 particles = Molar Mass (g)

7 Molar Mass For our purposes, AKA…
Formula weight, molecular weight, gram molecular weight, gram formula mass, and atomic weight Each term comes with a different unit WE are going to use them interchangeably

9 Molar Mass of Compounds
The molar mass of compounds is the molar mass of the atoms multiplied by the number of atoms in the compound.

10 Example What is the molar mass of water?

11 Molar Mass of Hydrates An ionic salt containing water molecules combined in a definite ratio as an integral part of the crystal Notation: hydrous compound . nH2O Copper sulfate pentahydrate CuSO4 . 5H2O

12 Example What is the molar mass of CuSO4 . 5H2O?

13 Let me know when you are done for answer sheet! 

14 What Substance Am I Activity?
You are in big trouble! You have an important restaurant reviewer coming to your restaurant tonight but someone has taken off all the labels from your bottles! How will you know which one is for your delectable dishes and which bottles contain substances the reviewer will probably find hazardous?

15 Task There are 6 bottles with the label removed.
Each contains one mole of an unknown substance. Using only an electronic balance and your periodic table, determine what each substance is.

16 Clues Four of the six are elements, 2 are compounds.
The compounds are in bottles are either NaCl, FeS, CaCO3, SiO2, or C6H12O6 The mass of the each bottle is written on the bottle. Bottles 1, 2, 4, and 6 have elements

17 Task Solve the Molar Masses Weigh the different bottles (in each group) Complete back for mole/molecule problems TURN INTO BIN!!!!
