In a hermetic compressor motor and compressor are inside a tight casing. Hermetic compressors are cooled with suction gas in general. Small piston type and scroll compressors are usually hermetic compressors. Hermetic piston compressors are used e.g. in household refrigerators and freezers and in small size cold rooms and display cabinets. These were used earlier also in air conditioning systems. Hermetic scroll compressors are used nowadays in ground source heat pumps, air to air heat pumps, in small size chillers, direct cooling systems of air handling units etc. They have replaced almost totally piston compressors. They are less moving parts in scroll compressors than in piston compressors and they run with less vibration. Aki Valkeapää

In semi-hermetic compressors electric motor and compressor are inside a casing which can be opened, so compressor can be repaired unlike hermetic compressors. Medium and big size piston and screw compressors are semi hermetic compressors. Aki Valkeapää
