Perception among medical students on their educational environment in National Defence University of Malaysia (NDUM) Aida Jaffar, Halyna Lugova, Mala Manickam, Hasliza Abu Hassan, Victor Feizal Knight Faculty of Medicine and Defence Health, National Defence University of Malaysia INTRODUCTION Educational environment has become an important factor for students to empower themselves – efficient learning.1 NDUM offers a unique program whereas Military Medicine subjects (i.e. Operational Medicine, Aerospace Medicine, Maritime Medicine, and Battlefield Medicine) are embedded in blocks near the end of each academic year. This study is to determine the perceptions of the NDUM medical students towards their educational environment. METHODOLOGY Study Design Cross-sectional study Study Location NDUM and Hospital Angkatan Tentera Tuanku Mizan Study Population 230 medical students (year 1-year 5) Study Instruments Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) Questionnaire2 RESULTS Response rate (n = 182, 71.9%), male (n=106, 58.2%), Malay (n=121, 66.8%), military cadet (n=133, 73.1%) Total DREEM Score [ ]: Mean (±SD) = (±14.47) Students’ Perception of Learning [0 - 48]: Mean (±SD) = (±3.80) 25. The teaching overemphasizes factual learning* [0 – 4]: Mean (±SD)= 1.31 (±0.76) Problem area DISCUSSION 1. The total subscale scores in this study were higher compared with two other Malaysian studies 3,4. 2. The military training module contributed positive elements and added value to the educational environment. Students’ Perceptions of Teachers [0 - 44]: Mean (±SD) = (±3.41) 2. The teachers are knowledgeable [0 - 4]: Mean (±SD)= 3.75 (±0.44) Students’ Perception of Atmosphere [0 - 48]: Mean (±SD) = (±4.97) 17. Cheating is a problem in this school* [0 - 4]: Mean (±SD)= 2.22 (±1.15) CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS 1. Medical students showed positive scores in all five domains of the educational environment of their Medical Degree program. 2. This study need to be expanded to include other NDUM faculties.
