1 Point Of View

2 What is Point of View??? Point of View (POV) is the perspective from which a story is told.

3 First Person Point of View
Let’s look at… First Person Point of View

4 First Person Point of View:
In first person POV, the story is told by one of the characters. The character telling the story uses pronouns like: I, me, my, mine, we, etc. and usually participates in much of the action.

5 First Person Point of View (cont):
Because the story is told from just one character’s POV, the reader is limited to knowing only what that character knows, thinks, and feels. All the information about the story must come from this one character/narrator.

6 First Person Point of View (cont):
Read the following passage: As soon as I found out that three new pigs had moved into the neighborhood, I started to practice my house-destroying techniques. I like to blow down houses and eat whoever is inside. The little pigs have built their houses out of different materials-but I know I can blow ‘em down in no time.

7 -Which fairy tale did this passage come from?
-Which POV is being used? -What key words are being used to give you clues to the POV? 8 Third Person Point of View
Let’s look at… Third Person Point of View

9 Third Person Point of View
In third person POV, the story is told by a narrator who is not a character in the story. The narrator uses pronouns such as, she, he, they, them, etc.

10 Third Person Point of View (cont.)
In third person POV, the narrator relates the thoughts and feelings of ALL the characters in the story. This is called an all-knowing or omniscient narrator.

11 Third Person Point of View (cont.)
In third person POV, the all-knowing or omniscient narrator knows everything about the characters and can tell us about the past, present, and the future relating to the story.

12 Third Person Point of View (cont.)
Read the following passage: Once upon a time, in a small village, there were three houses built by three brother pigs. One house was made of straw, one was made of twigs, and one was made of bricks. Each pig thought his house was the best and the strongest. A wolf-a very hungry wolf-lived just outside of town. He was practicing house-destroying techniques and was trying to decide which pig’s house was the weakest.

14 Finally, let’s discuss…
Second Person Point of View

15 Second Person Point of View:
In second person POV, the writer speaks directly to the reader; makes the reader feel he or she is part of the audience. The writer uses pronouns like "you“ “your” “ya’ll” (personal favorite)

16 Where do I find Second Person Point of View?

17 Most cook books and other books of instruction are written in second person point of view.
The instructions to a new video game you’ve bought is told in second person point of view. Second person point of view is used in literature but it is very uncommon.

18 Any question about point of view???
