2. K-W-L Chart Warm-Up
Please pick up a copy of the ACT K-W-L Chart before you take your seats.
For today’s warm-up, you will complete the K column. In order to complete this column, please answer the questions below in the K column:
What do you already know about the ACT? What subjects does it teach? Why is it important for you to take the ACT?

3. Learning Objectives
Content Objective: Students will be able to describe the structure of the ACT test, how it is scored, and what is assesses.
Language Objective: Students will watch a short presentation about the ACT Test and complete the W and L columns of the KWL chart.
Language Objective: Students will complete a short pre-assessment on the first unit.

4. W Column-WHAT DO YOU WANT TO LEARN?
Before we begin the presentation, write down three things you want to learn about the ACT in the K column.
You can phrase them as questions if you want. If your questions are not answered during the presentation, we will have a short Q and A session at the end to make sure all of your questions are answered.

5. The L Column- WHAT YOU LEARN
As we proceed through the presentation, write down what you learn in the L column of the worksheet.
Be sure to look for the answers to your questions from the W column during the presentation.
You will be submitting this KWL chart for a grade at the end of the period.

6. Structure of the ACT Test
1. English- 75 multiple choice questions to be completed in 45 minutes.
2. Math- 60 multiple choice questions to be completed in 60 minutes.
3. Reading- 40 multiple choice questions to be completed in 35 minutes.
4. Science- 40 multiple choice questions to be completed in 35 minutes.
5. Writing- The test is optional, but highly recommended for students wishing to attend a selective school.

7. Scoring the ACT Each question is worth one point.
For each test, you receive a raw score and a scale score. The scale score is important because it shows how you compare to other high school juniors.
You get a score out of 36 for each test. Those four tests are averaged together to get your overall composite score.
It is crucial that you bubble an answer for every question! (Letter of the Day)

Topics Tested
Grammar, Punctuation, and Rhetoric. Rhetoric is just a fancy word that means good writing style.
Think of each passage like a paper you have to edit. The questions will ask you if a certain passage is correct as written, or if there is a better option.

Topics Tested
Inferring, Paraphrasing, Retrieving, and Summarizing.
The four passages consist of: Prose Fiction, Social Science, Humanities, and Natural Science.

Review your questions from the W column and your notes from the L column. Did all of your questions get answered?

11. Anatomy of a Sentence Pre-Assessment
We are going to take a pre-assessment on the content covered in the first unit.
This pre-assessment needs to be completed on an individual basis. There will be no talking during this time.
Your grade on this pre-assessment will not have a negative effect on your grade.
