Salem has a rich history that includes a key role in the spice trade with the East Indies, and its waterfront is still very active with both recreational and commercial uses. THE CITY OF SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS Salem is an historic coastal city located 15 miles (25 kilometers) north of the state’s capital, Boston. 6

7 THE CITY OF SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS
Salem’s waterfront plays host to a number of events and attractions, including an annual celebration of America’s most important holiday, the 4th of July. Thousands gather downtown to enjoy a concert and fireworks. Prominent on the waterfront is Friendship of Salem, a replica sailing vessel that represents Salem's role as a center of global trade in 18th-century America. THE CITY OF SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS Salem’s waterfront remains an important part of the city’s cultural and entertainment center. 7

28 Research & Writing Initiative
Luncheon Meetings RWI holds luncheon meetings throughout the academic year. The luncheon meetings are an opportunity for faculty and librarians who share common research and writing interests to network and form smaller writing groups. These smaller groups may meet and exchange writing pieces for peer editing. Summer Workshop RWI also provides partial funding for an annual summer workshop for Faculty Writers.   During the summer workshops groups of writers meet to refine and edit their pieces with faculty peers and with an editor. Groups have included scientific research writing as well as arts and sciences research and creative writing. Writers explore publishing venues and prepare their pieces for publication.

41 ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)
Our ESL program offers small classes that incorporate a whole language approach. Our ESL program has 125 students from 37 different countries this semester. Our ESL faculty members are experienced professionals with advanced degrees in English instruction. Students can transfer from ESL into undergraduate and graduate degree programs Students from countries across the globe often begin their studies at Salem State through its English as a Second Language program. Here they learn about American culture and the cultures of their fellow students while improving their English. Once they have perfected their English, a large percentage of our ESL students continue their studies at Salem State as undergraduate and graduate students, adding their own unique perspectives in class and enabling our entire campus to enjoy a more global view of the world in which we all live. 41

42 STUDENTS LIVE ON CAMPUS
More than 2,000 students live on campus in five residence halls. There is an international entryway where both international and domestic students live to share cultures and perspectives. Marsh Hall (pictured) is one of our newest housing option for students. The residential community at Salem State University is a place where learning and development occur through academic initiatives, leadership opportunities, programming, and the efforts of the residence life staff. A true Salem State experience involves more than going to classes and earning a diploma. Life in the residence halls includes involvement in groups and organizations, participation in community service activities, connecting with faculty through the Cornerstone Project, attending athletic events, and learning about cultures and lifestyles different from your own.  Marsh Hall, shown here, was completed in 2010 and accommodates approximately 525 sophomore students. Marsh Hall offers small lounges (both television and study lounges) throughout the building and a large community space on the ground floor, including a fitness room, mailboxes, vending, a laundry area, pool tables, air hockey, and a television and lounge area.  Two faculty-in-residence live in Marsh Hall and coordinate academic themed programs within the building. The Boston chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (recognized Marsh Hall in 2011 for outstanding landscape design. 42
