King Charles raises taxes causing many people to leave England Dissenters: People who disagree with official business (Puritans)

2 Puritans leaving Great Migration:
: 40,000 English emigrants moved to the colonies 1630: Puritans made a covenant or sacred agreement for a Christian community. Called Massachusetts

3 Massachusetts Healthy climate Little Native resistance
John Winthrop= Governor Boston became the chief city

4 Government General Court Each town sent 2 to 3 delegates
Formed a 2 house legislature Only male church members could vote

5 Daily Life Most people are Puritans, but not all
Most people were middle class Skilled workers…Farmers, Fishers, Fur trappers Planted crops for their own use Most people lived on small farms

6 Question to Consider By not having large farms and growing food for ones own needs, (Not for Profit), what kinds of people did the Puritans not have to bring over? How would Indentured Servants/Slaves present problems to the Puritan colonists?

2. Run the Household Examples (Do dishes, watch babies, change poopy diapers) 3. Obey Your HUSBAND. The man is in CHARGE Education mandatory…How else would you read the Bible

8 Connecticut First to separate from Puritans
1636: Thomas Hooker and followers head south to form colony Fundamental Orders of Connecticut All men could vote General Courts had more rules

9 Rhode Island Roger Williams is kicked out of Massachusetts and starts his own colony. Rhode Island disagrees with the Religious Government and Not paying for Indian lands of MA. Practiced Religious Tolerance

10 Anne Hutchinson People were not to discuss the bible. That was the job of priests Anne Hutchinson was thrown out of the church for having bible study groups

11 Salem Witch Trials Occurred between 1692-1693
A group of girls accused several women in Salem of casting spells on them Over 2o0 people accused of witchcraft Most believed that Satan roamed the earth 20 people were executed 19 were hung One 71 year old man was pressed to death with stones (confession) Several died in prison
