4 Key tips When universities receive your application there are several key elements that they are looking for. There are some common mistakes made every year – please try to avoid them!!! Remember that you can view and amend your application at any time from any computer with Internet access. Make the most of opportunities to work on your form regularly and ask friends and family to help you check for mistakes.

6 You must register before you can log in to UCAS

7 Registering Select NEXT and then tick the box to agree to accept the terms and conditions on the next screen

8 Personal Details Wherever possible use the drop down menu rather than type in answers as this will avoid errors

9 You all have UK postal addresses!

10 Basic Details Enter your house number and postcode
Home telephone number Mobile number address – if you have a daft address, change it now! Say ‘Yes’ to – ‘Keeping you informed about your UCAS application’ Say ‘No’ to ‘Telling you about other relevant products and services’!

11 Keep a note of your password
Use your Postcode. Answer these questions sensibly – you may need to use these if you forget your password

12 Keep a note of your username – then go to log in now

13 You are applying through school
The buzzword is Uniherewecome17 On the next screen the name and address of the school should appear – click ‘Yes’ and ‘Next’

14 Another important thing to write down!!!!
You need to follow the instructions to verify your address You are now fully registered – you can carry on by clicking here

15 Personal details Nationality – UK National for almost everyone
Dual nationality? Area of Permanent Residence – Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex? Residential Category – UK Citizen or EU National Ignore the reference numbers Don’t enter your Passport Details

16 Please get this right!!!! Hopefully the answer is No Just say no!
This will be Suffolk, Essex or Norfolk This is new this year – ask your parents if you are unsure Hopefully the answer is No Just say no!

17 You should nominate a parent to access UCAS if you are away at a crucial time
If you have a special need, list it here. This will not prejudice your application Don’t forget to save before moving to the next section

18 Additional Information
Apart from ‘Ethic Origin’ and ‘Parental Occupation’, it is up to you whether you complete and what you answer to the questions in this section ‘Activities in preparation for higher education’ – you could enter details of any summer schools, EPQ at UCS etc you have attended ‘Parental Education/Occupation’ – this information is collected for statistical purposes and is not used as part of the decision process Remember to mark the section as complete and to save

19 Student Finance Read through the information on Student Finance – you don’t have to decide if you are applying at this stage You can choose to allow UCAS to share you details with the Student Finance company to speed up the application process You can ask for a reminder of when and how to apply for Student Finance Remember to mark the section as complete and to save

20 Choices Skip this section at the moment – you should wait and complete this after you have your AS results, A level or Vocational Predictions.

21 Now move on to ‘Education’
Select your school from the list. If you joined us for the Sixth Form you will need to add two schools You will have below honours degree level qualifications when you start your course

22 Get the dates right – The start date will depend on whether you have been with us since Year 7, but you will all finish in June You are all full time and you will all get qualifications! DON’T FORGET TO SAVE!!

23 Now click to begin adding your GCSEs

24 It is vital to choose the correct qualifications!!
Use the drop down menus. Begin by choosing GCSE and GCSE short course.

25 Make sure you know the Awarding Body and the correct name of the qualification – always use the drop down menus

26 Some of you can also put in the details of qualifications you will receive in the future such as A levels or B/C Techs Mark the grade as ‘pending’ for now – you can put the actual grade in after the summer

27 Be very careful when entering your qualifications
You should be able to find all qualifications taken at TGS in one of these links. If you have taken qualifications we don’t offer at a previous school, use the search facility

28 TGS qualifications Pearson BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Business (QCF). Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 First Award in Information and Creative Technology. Pearson Edexcel Level 1/Level 2 GCSE in Computer Science Pearson BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in IT (QCF). Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 First Award in Application of Science.  Pearson BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Applied Science (QCF). OCR Level 3 Cambridge Technical Introductory Diploma in Media (QCF). OCR Level 3 Cambridge Technical Diploma in Media (QCF). AQA Level 1/Level 2 GCSE in Media Studies Duke of Edinburgh Award - you can enter this if you wish; a limited number of courses give credit for DofE Extended Project (Level 3) – the Level 3 EPQ taken in Year 12 GCE Advanced Level GCE Advanced Subsidiary (first award 2001) GCSE GCSE Short Course – RS

29 GCSEs Use your exam certificates to get these details right – especially the Awarding Organisation (Exam Board)

30 A Levels You can enter qualifications that you will get in the summer – just mark the grade as pending When you go back in September to add your grades you will also have the option to enter module results for AS/A Levels. You should only do this if all your modules are excellent – ie. A grades 4

31 Btec/Ctec Level 3 Qualifications
Mark the grade as ‘pending’. You will also be prompted to add a BTEC Registration Number – Ask your teacher or Mr Marshall(Exams officer) for this is you do not know it

32 Education You cannot mark this section as complete yet. You will return to it and complete once you have your results in the summer

33 Employment

34 When you have finished you can click on ‘View all details’ and check for mistakes

35 Research, Research, Research!
Try to find out what percentage of graduates from the courses which interest you found employment, and what form did this employment take? If you struggle to find this information, telephone or the university – by law they must publish this data.
