1 LT- Today, I can identify the difference between plant and animal cells by using my prior knowledge and citing from a video and other sources. What are some of the organelles of plant and animal cells? What are the differences between a plant and animal cell? Do Now- What organelles do you remember from last year and what are their functions (jobs)?

2 1. Watch the video- “Parts of the Cell” Pay close attention because your group will have to use this information to answer questions about the plant and animal cell to complete the activity and construct your notes. 2. Plant vs Animal Cell Activity

3

4 1. Staple the diagram in your notebook.
2. Identify the animal cell vs the plant cell. Write the “animal” above the animal cell and “plant” above the plant cell. 3. What characteristics does the plant cell have that the animal cell does not have? There are 4 characteristics that the plant cell has that the animal cell does not (the video only highlights 2). A Venn Diagram can be used 4. Label the following organelles (some organelles belong to both cells and some only belong to one of the cells): Cell membrane Cytoplasm Cell wall Nucleus Chloroplast Mitochondria Vacuole 5. Identify the function of the structures. You can use structure function strips if you need help. 6. Add the structures and their functions into your notebook.

5 Controls the movement of substances in and out of cells. G Cell Wall 2
Answer Key Structure Function Cell Membrane 1 Controls the movement of substances in and out of cells. G Cell Wall 2 provides the cell with both structural support and protection F Chloroplast 3 Contains chlorophyll which is used to convert light energy of the Sun into sugars that can be used by cells E Vacuole 4 Stores food, water…materials that the cell needs. Stores wastes…materials that the cell needs to get rid of. D

6 Cytoplasm 5 Present within the cell membrane of all cell types and contains all organelles and cell parts. Materials within the cell are able to move from one organelle to another through this material. C Nucleus 6 In eukaryotic cells, it contains the majority of the genetic material. B Mitochondria 7 Energy in made in this organelle by the process of cellular respiration. A
