•  Why Interscholastic Athletics & OHSAA Beliefs • While participating in interscholastic athletics: • Student academic achievement and success take priority over athletics achievement and success. • The success of a team is more important than individual awards. Participation in interscholastic athletics programs is a privilege, not a right.

10 Basic OHSAA Rules & Regulations

11 As a student-athlete, YOU are responsible for your compliance.
•  General OHSAA Eligibility Standards • Eligibility rules exist to help maintain competitive balance in school sports and to promote the purpose of education-based athletics. As a student-athlete, YOU are responsible for your compliance. Besides OHSAA regulations, Roosevelt also has the authority to establish additional academic standards and codes of conduct.

12 •  General OHSAA Eligibility Standards •
In order to maintain eligibility, you must be officially enrolled in an OHSAA member school or participating in accordance with state law AND you must have both parents living in Ohio or the parent or guardian with custody must live in Ohio. If this is your first season of athletic participation (no previous sport(s) played) at Roosevelt and you did not attend Roosevelt or Stanton last year, you must see Mr. Pfaff in the athletic office ASAP.

13 •  OHSAA Scholarship Standards •
To maintain eligibility, high school students must have received passing grades in a minimum of five one-credit courses, or the equivalent, in the immediately preceding grading period (1st 9 weeks). To maintain eligibility, 7th & 8th grade students must have received passing grades in a minimum of five of the subjects in which they received grades in the immediately preceding grading period (1st 9 weeks).

14 Semester and yearly grades have no effect on OHSAA eligibility.
•  OHSAA Scholarship Standards • Students taking College Credit Plus or PSEO must comply with OHSAA scholarship standards. All students participating via state law that permits home educated, non-public, community and STEM school students to participate at public schools must also comply with OHSAA scholarship standards. Semester and yearly grades have no effect on OHSAA eligibility.

15 •  OHSAA Scholarship Standards •
If you drop a course or change your schedule, it is very important that you contact the guidance or athletic departments to confirm you will maintain 5 credits. The OHSAA has no minimum grade point (GPA) requirement, however, Kent City Schools requires a 2.0 GPA to be eligible without tutoring.

16 •  OHSAA Semester Standards •
No high school student will be eligible if he or she has been enrolled in high school for more than eight semesters. No 7th-8th grade student will be eligible if he or she has been enrolled in 7th-8th grade for more than four semesters.

17 •  OHSAA Age Standards • High school students will be ineligible whenever they turn 20 years old. Seventh and eighth grade students who turn 15 before August 1st are also ineligible for 7th and 8th grade sports.

18 •  OHSAA Non-School Team & Out-of-Season Standards •
You will be ineligible if you are competing on a non-school team in the same sport during your school team’s season (example: AAU basketball team during school’s basketball season). Coaches and schools cannot require that you participate in an open gym/open facility OR in a conditioning or instructional program.

19 •  OHSAA Transfer Standards •
VERY IMPORTANT: Once eligibility has been established at a member high school and you transfer to another school, you will be ineligible for all contests until the first 50% of the maximum allowable regular season contests have been competed in any sport in which you participated during the previous 12 months.

20 Your Health & Safety

21 •  Your Health & Safety • Before the season’s first official practice, you must have had a physical examination within the past year AND an examination clearance form must be on file at the school. Form on our website. In addition, you will not be eligible unless you and your parents have signed the Ohio Department of Health’s concussion form, which must be on file at your school. Form on our website.

22 •  Concussions • It is EXTREMELY important for everyone involved in school sports to recognize the potential dangers associated with concussions and review their responsibilities in protecting student-athletes. Concussions are NOT just a problem in football concussions can happen in just about any sport! A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that interferes with normal function of the brain. “Dings” and “bell ringers” are SERIOUS brain injuries and you do NOT have to have loss of consciousness for it to be considered serious.

23 •  Concussions • Roosevelt’s medical team has very strict concussion management protocol and all athletes, parents and coaches are required to adhere to it. In addition, athletes and parents must review and sign the Ohio Department of Health’s “Concussion Information Sheet” prior to participation. Your are also highly encouraged to review a short presentation on concussions available at no cost (

24 •  Additional Health & Safety Guidelines •
The OHSAA does not permit the use of any form of alcohol, tobacco or illegal drugs. KCS has a board approved Athletic Code of Conduct for it’s athletes for POSSESION OR USE of Tobacco, Alcohol and/or Drugs – First Offense – Denial of 20% of scheduled contests, beginning on the date of notification. Subsequent Offenses the same academic year – Denial of 40% of contests, beginning on the date of notification.

25 Sporting Behavior

26 •  Respect The Game • The OHSAA and KCS’s vision for positive sporting behavior is built on expectations. It calls on the school community, administrators, officials, coaches, students, parents and fans to strive for positive sporting behavior in everything they do by teaching and demonstrating the value of ethics, integrity, equity, fairness and respect. Kent City Schools has an athlete and a fan code of conduct to enforce sporting behavior, ethics and integrity. The fan code of conduct is outlined in the athletic handbook.

27 •  Respect The Game • All of us are expected to accept the responsibility and privilege of representing our schools and community in a positive manner while participating in and watching our athletic events. You are expected to: • Treat opponents, coaches and officials with respect. • Ensure that your actions do not attempt to embarrass, ridicule or demean others. STAY POSITIVE!!
