Overview The project‘s aim The project‘s location Why fog but no rain
Prehistory The project‘s aim The project‘s location Why fog but no rain Realisation The real water catchment Achieved aims Perspective
3
Prehistory Call of the concern Bayer & the magazine „National Geographic Germany“ for the extraction, preparation and protection of drinking water 1,3 billion people without clean drinking water Appropriation: €
4
Prehistory Application of 94 projects in Europe, Asia and South America One of the winners: Kai Tiedemann with the fog- catcher- project Start of the project with Anne Lummerich
5
The project‘s aim Water catchment, especially drinking water
Water catchment which can be performed of the natives themselves
6
The project‘s location
This project was performed in Lima, Peru
7
The project‘s location
Dry coast- hills High of the Andes Immigration to cities from the pampas to the vicinity of Lima Many poor people 10mm rain per year, BUT durable fog
8
Why fog but no rain?
9
Realisation With $ for the project and $ for life they flew to Lima, Peru. exact knowledge about the fog and its formation Technical equipment Problem: the project‘s realisation would not be possible without the natives‘ help
10
Realisation Persuade the natives for this project
Reforestation of the hills (more than trees had to be planted and cultivated) Nets out of plastic had to be made and tensed
11
Realisation To break big stones up they had only iron rods
To create terraces, pathways and stairs they had only shovels Building materials must be transported from top to the bottom with chains of people
12
The real water catchment
Basic principle is condensation Fog condenses on nets (synthetic fog- catcher)
13
The real water catchment
If trees preserve themselves → they are also fog- catcher (natural fog- catcher)
14
Achieved aims Water catchment (more than 100 000l in under 8 weeks)
No drinking water yet but water for irrigation and to washing Social project: Natives learned to take on responsibility, education, hope for other projects and for the future
15
Perspective To catch drinking water, they only need a filter and a system to add chlorine (about $ ) Other towns and villages ask for help to do projects like this one
