1 UMove: A Mobile Sub-Maximal Fitness Test Application for Wheelchair Users
Lisa Morgan, Stefan Riemens, Michael Cassens BA, MSCS & James J. Laskin PhD., PT1 Computer Science, Human Biology & Physical Therapy Classification of Paraplegia Sub-Maximal Tests Performed Independently Classification of wheelchair users for the application is based on a scale from 1 – 4.5 in 0.5 increments Application incorporates classification scores according to the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation Manual2 Class 1: T1-T7 paraplegia Class 2: T8-L1 paraplegia Class 3: L2-L4 paraplegia Class 4: Single or double below-knee amputees Fitness assessments provide clinicians with reliable and valid data concerning patient state Maximal testing requires maximal effort, proving difficult in individuals with disabilities Sub-maximal testing is less labor intensive and requires less monitoring equipment to conduct Mobile application technology has emerged as a valuable tool in the fitness market, but minimal products target wheelchair users A cadence-based field test can easily be applied in various custom settings Self-monitoring of fitness may encourage wheelchair users to maximize their activity to improve their overall health Application Functionality In order to maximize the utility of our application, we employed the cadence-based fitness test model into the design The application allows users to designate their personal specifications to their physical attributes i.e. Classification A settings panel allows for customized controlling Custom testing location and distance can be entered in order to determine fitness level outcome based on performance A stepwise forward linear regression determines performance through either of the equations below1 At 60 pushes/min: Peak VO2 (L/min) = (classification) (distance covered) – 0.15(RPE) At 80 pushes/min: Peak VO2 (L/min) = (distance covered) – 0.16(RPE) (classification) Patient/user information can be stored on the host device through the SQLite Database in order to track individual progress Conclusions & Implications Easy access to fitness testing regardless of setting may improve wheelchair-user activity levels The inclusion of our application in a clinical or domestic setting simplifies the tracking of patient development and assessment Standardized testing to determine fitness will become more accessible to individuals of all mobility levels We hope to further the profession of physical therapy through technology and provide self-monitoring opportunities for individuals of all mobility levels References Laskin, J.J., Slivka, D., & Frogley, M.
