You are on your way home and realize you’ve forgotten where you live. Your mom just got an from Ms. Conant. What does the say? A plane is available to you free of charge. Where do you tell the pilot to take you?

2 Essential Questions Oct 29
What is the difference between literal and figurative language? What is Metaphor and how do I recognize it? What is Simile and how do I recognize it? What is Personification and how do I recognize it? Why is Alliteration a Sound Device and not figurative language? What is Allusion and how do I recognize it? Once I’ve identified figurative language in a text, how can I interpret the effect it has on the text?

3 Personification A figure of speech which gives the qualities of a person to an animal, an object, or an idea. “The wind yells while blowing." The wind cannot yell. Only a living thing can yell.

4 Personification Activity
Choose one of the following examples. Write the statement on your paper then draw a picture based on the literal interpretation of the statement. Do this with a partner. The full moon guided me through the forest. The sun danced across the sky on the hot summer day. The old car groaned as it made its way down the long open road. The lonely wind whispered as it blew through the old creaky windows. The leaves raced to the ground as the children ran across the playground. The tornado pranced across the field and wiped away everything in its path.

5 Alliteration Repetition of initial (beginning) consonant (not vowels) sounds. Sound Device Mighty Mary made me some muffins. Zany Zoe zipped around the zoo. Lazy Leo lounged on the cushions. Serious Cindy said hello to her sassy sister. Devilish Daniel was dared to drop from the sky.

6 Effect of Alliteration
To Create Mood To Create Rhythm To Make you Laugh To Help you Remember To Place Emphasis on a Particular Section

7 Alliteration Homework
Choose a consonant Write a 5-7 line poem about whatever you want using a variety of words that begin with the chosen consonant. Do this as an individual.

8 Examples Soft smooth snow falls silently from the sky. The snow is so silvery and small. Slowly you slip and slide on the snow. Conant causing a commotion in the class. Cranky and calculating as she cracks skulls together. Constant chaos. Kids collapsing. Commitment

9 More Homework Read, Read, Read – works by the author of your choice.

10 Wrap It Up What is Personification?
