9. Poverty in education
around 15% of Americans live in poverty
Highest % are Black , NNA and Hispanic , all above 60%
Lowest % White and Asian
any surprises?

10. Schools in areas of poverty:
have lower test scores, lower achievement scores
have a higher drop out rate
have a higher % of students having children while still in school
have less $ resources
have less teaching resources
They are part of the cycle of poverty…..it’s hard to get out!

11. Language Diversity
Do we have an official national language?
Pockets of non-English language speakers:
Fla., NYC, Southwest, California, Cajun Country, Maine
37 million of Americans speak a language other then English at home
American Dialects: Southern ( Honey Boo Boo is closed captioned!), Midwestern ( soda=pop)….Hoggies/Subs/Hearos/Grinders and Po Boys
Lehigh Valley isms…double negatives and “yous guys”
Accents: ( Philly has 17 distinct accents…there is a Catholic School accent and public school accent, hence a neighborhood can have two distinct accents on the same block!)
