1 The mole

2 Molar Mass

3 Recall The term “Avogadro’s Number” was coined by Jean Baptiste Perrin when he determined the number of atoms in one gram of atomic hydrogen And he figured out that 1 gram of hydrogen has 6.022x1023 atoms Remember: 6.022x1023 atoms = 1 mole Which means that 1 mole of hydrogen has a mass of 1 gram

4 Recall Also remember that atomic mass is measured in atomic mass units (amu) 1 amu = 1/12 mass of a carbon atom Going back to Avogadro, based on Avogadro’s Law there are x1023 atoms in 12 grams of C-12 Basically, look at the number of amu on the periodic table = Number of grams per mole for that element

5 Atomic Molar Mass (MM) MM of C = 12.01 g/mol
What is molar mass? The mass (g) of 1 mole of atoms of a particular element or molecule → The mass (g) of 6.02 X 1023 atoms or particles How do you figure out molar mass? Find on periodic table MM of H = g/mol MM of C = g/mol

6 practice 14.01 g/mol 87.62 g/mol 55.85 g/mol 26.98 g/mol
What is the molar mass of the following elements? Nitrogen: Strontium: Iron: Aluminum: 14.01 g/mol 87.62 g/mol 55.85 g/mol 26.98 g/mol

7 Calculations with Molar Mass
molar mass (g/mol) Mass (g) n (mol)

8 practice 1 mol Al = 26.98g 3 mol Al = 26.98g x 3.00 = 80.9 g
Aluminum is often used for the structure of light-weight bicycle frames. How many grams of Al are in 3.00 moles of Al? 3.00 moles Al ? g Al 1 mol Al = 26.98g 3 mol Al = 26.98g x 3.00 = 80.9 g

9 Everything must go through Moles!!!
Calculations molar mass (g/mol) Avogadro’s number (6.02 X 1023 particles/mole) mass (g) n (mol) particles Everything must go through Moles!!!

10 Let’s combine it all!

13 Molecular Molar Mass (MM)
Mass in grams of 1 mole equals the sum of the atomic masses H2 H20 2 x (MM of H) = 2(1.01g/mol) = 2.02g/mol (2 x (MM of H)) + (MM of O) = 2(1.01g/mol) + (16.00g/mol) = g/mol)

14 Practice CH3OH Al2(SO4)3 (1 x MM of C) + (4 x MM of H) + (1 x MM of O)
