5. Discussion of Chapter 9
The Danish religious system described is described as multiple gods being worshipped with one god being the supreme being above all the other. The gods specified are all nature-based:
Wolf-god
Bull-god
Horse-god
The Destroyer (supreme being)
Religion is losing strength in the Danish kingdom so the old priest, Ork, tries to come up with a new system.
Ork represents a new kind of priest, the only one who has “thought [all the mysteries] out.”
He is a theologian-one whose faith and reason are not one in the same.
Like the dragon, Ork knows time will erase everything eventually.

6. Discussion of Chapter 9
The fourth priest understands Ork’s theology but, like the other three priests, also disapproves.
To the fourth priest, he feels Ork is confining faith and reason to a closed system that is not acceptable to the living.
Despite the novel jumping around in time, the seasons remain consistent.
These final chapters approach, and move into, winter. (A time of death.)
The seasonal change to winter foreshadows Grendel’s own death.
The priests worshipping a god called the Destroyer (whose purpose is to annihilate Grendel) appear to be summoning someone.

7. Discussion of Chapter 9
Grendel can sense death coming-he imagines he hears footsteps and is afraid.
He feels the whole world is getting ready for some end-of-the-world event.
The Danes are restless and apprehensive, and unable to fall asleep.
Grendel feels the bowman shooting a hart (male deer) is some puzzle he is unable to figure out the meaning to.
The strange “stirrings” in the winter air throughout this chapter suggest we are moving into a new phase of the novel.
