Team Asia: Kelly Mulcahey, Maggie Winstead, Gabriel Arico, Anant Mathur, Michael Shafer

2 There is a great need to achieve sustainability
"In the past 50 years, humans have consumed more resources than in all previous history" "Earth's mean surface temperature has increased by about 1.4 °F...two-thirds of the increase occurring since 1980" America's Climate Choices. Washington, D.C.: The National Academies Press p ISBN Back to the the Mesopotamians, Egyptians, Native Americans, ancient romans, middle ages, enlightenment, industrial rev, wwi WWII, cold war... Then 50 years later, we've consumed more than ALL of that. the earth is finite, resources are depletable, we have polluted rivers and gone to extremes of extraction, excavation, and exhort when will we get extreme about reducing, reusing recycling what are we waiting for?

3 Ray's Company has accepted the challenge
Drastically Cut GHG Emission -reduced facility emissions worldwide by 60 percent since 1996 Ensures no carpet ends in a landfill -60% ZERO

4 Today We'll Cover: 1) Who is Ray Anderson?
2) What called Ray to action? 3) What was Ray's Goal? 4) What actions did Ray take? 5) What were the results of his work? 6) The Lesson of Ray and Interface 7) Our Part -- Continuing his work

5 Ray Anderson (1934-2011): a Short Bio
Georgia Institute of Technology Honors Graduate 14 years of prior experience in the carpet-manufacturing industry 1973: founded Interface, first producer of free lay carpet tiles in America Today: world's largest producer of commercial floor coverings with sales in 110 countries and manufacturing sites on four continents. Gabriel

6 What changed Ray’s Thinking?
-Summer 1994: Ray reads "The Ecology of Commerce" by Paul Hawken - Hawken accuses business and industry as the leader in the plundering of Earth - Says businesses are the only institution powerful enough to change the trend of a globally declining biosphere Gabriel

7 Ray's Goal: Mission Zero
Take only from the earth that which can be renewed by the earth naturally and rapidly, while also doing no harm to the biosphere "Mission Zero is the company's promise to eliminate any negative impact it may have on the environment, by the year 2020, through the redesign of processes and products, the pioneering of new technologies, and efforts to reduce or eliminate waste and harmful emissions while increasing the use of renewable materials and sources of energy." interface, Inc. official website Gabriel

8 Action Taken Use Carbohydrate Polymers
Instead of Petroleum ones For backing, use recycled old-carpet sludge filled in pellets Install renewable energy plants at all sites Solar and wind-mill based energy Anant

9 Sustainability Resulted in (by 2007)...
Greenhouse-gas emissions by absolute tonnage were down 92% since 1995 water usage down 75% 74,000 tones used carpet had been recovered from landfills. Anant

10 Making good environmental decisions proved to be rewarding financially
[ The $400 million he was saving each year by making no scrap and no off- quality tiles more than paid for the R&D and the process changes. As much as 25% of the company's new material came from "post- consumer recycling" $400 Million saved each year No Scrap No off-quality tiles [ [ [

12 The Lesson of Anderson and Interface
Reduce footprint- Earth is our home Sustainability exists in all dimensions Make your ideas heard Set your aspirations high Maggie -To reduce our environmental footprint - Planet Earth was here before us and now we inhabit it as ours - It is our home and we want it to stay that way -Sustainability exists in all dimensions and Interface implements it in all of the companies dimensions: -People, process, product, place and profits -Ray Anderson shows that hard work and determination get you where you want to be; and he also shows that when you have a good idea you should give it make your all and roll with it, make yourself heard -Anderson is the perfect model for an achiever. One of the biggest lesson to take from his legend: -Set your goals high but believe that you can reach them

13 Where must we pick up with Ray's Mission?
Energy Waste 5% Global Population lbs 26% Energy Expenditures trash/year/person Carbon Dioxide Food "USA..losing soil at 10X the natural replacement rate" "The food we eat travels 1,500-3,000 miles from farm to dinner plate"

14 YOU VOTE WITH YOUR MONEY
What Can we Do? Purchase from Companies that value our Planet YOU VOTE WITH YOUR MONEY

15 This was the first industrial revolution
I = P x A x T I = Environmental Impact P = Population A = Affluence T= Technology

16 This is the current industrial revolution
I = P x A T2 I = Environmental Impact P = Population A = Affluence T2= New Technology

17 We must know what matters MOST
