Peer review the third draft of our VA essays

2 Class Discussion: Creating Advertisements
If you were going to create an advertisement, what would you have to consider beforehand? What information would you need? What kind of advertisements seem most impactful to you? What kind of advertisements would be most impactful to your parents’ generation?

3 Class Discussion: Creating Advertisements
Imagine you have been asked to create a new Axe advertisement that target’s women (the product is still for men) Who would your target audience be? What medium would you use to reach this audience? How could you perpetuate the brand image/style that Axe is known for? Which visual rhetoric features would you use?

4 Group Activity: Designing Ads
In groups of 4-5 students Read the “Designing Ads” introduction on p. 130 and answer the following questions Who is the target audience? Consider age, gender, socio-economic status, etc. What is your core message or campaign concept? Why is this a good strategy to reach your audience? Consider a slogan, mirror/window effect, visual approach, etc. What is the best media landscape or genre for this campaign? How will you bluid a brand image and brand loyalty?

In groups of 2-3 students Select a hypothetical product from the list (next slide) Create a print advertisement or commercial (~30 seconds) for your product You will have to utilize 5 or more of the following techniques: Ethos Pathos Logos Mirror effect Window effect CF: Color CF: Lighting CF: Focus CF: Framing

6 Advertisement Project: Hypothetical Products
Incense A new, unisex deodorant that aims to appeal to men and women equally H3lp3r An app that assists and troubleshoots technological problems for the elderly or technologically challenged Profu A high protein tofu meat-substitute that is very nutritious (and tastes terrible) Aegis A type of smart phone that is water proof, shock resistant, and has an extended battery life (72+ hours) and a lifetime warranty. However, it costs 5x as much as other phones, and hasn’t had a great deal of success since its launch in January and wants to relaunch the campaign. The Orderly Post A new, conservative newspaper whose stories will only be published in print (no online presence) Oakland Farms A brand of chicken that received a great deal of bad press (and lowered sales) last year for its inhumane treatment of animals. The company hopes to launch a new ad campaign to regain public trust and show its new, animal friendly practices.

7 Group Activity: Grammar Peer Review
Exchange essays with one other student Read through the draft and mark any grammatical mistakes you find At the end, tally up the total number of grammatical mistakes you found and write this number at the top Have one other student evaluate the essay. The student with the best edited essay (least mistakes) will receive +5 points of extra credit on the final version of their essay

PRINTED and brought to conference Should include introduction, descriptions, body paragraphs, conclusion, and works cited page You will receive a 0 for this assignment if you have no works cited page
