September 16, 2014 Using Turnitin, GradeMark, and ETS e-rater in myWriteSmart

2 Using Turnitin, GradeMark, and ETS e-rater with myWriteSmart: Summary of Typical Workflow
Teacher creates/activates assignment in myWriteSmart [HMH provided or teacher-made (see slide labeled 1b – Creating a teacher-made prompt)] Student does an originality check with Turnitin Student submits assignment Teacher evaluates the assignment with the help of Turnitin, GradeMark, and ETS e- rater tools Teacher selects Turnitin to view originality percentage and launch Document Viewer Teacher reviews detailed originality info in the Document Viewer. Teacher can mark up assignment with GradeMark Teacher can access ETS e-rater feedback Teacher uses rubric in myWriteSmart, along with the feedback from the tools, to arrive at a score Teacher assigns a score and comments in myWriteSmart

3 1a. The teacher creates/activates the HMH Performance Task assignment.
When setting up the assignment, the teacher clicks Enable Turnitin for Originality Check/Essay Score within the assignment window. NOTES For ease of use, create assignments from the Resources section of the Dashboard rather than from Assignments. Only enable Turnitin if you want students to see their own Originality Scores before you grade their papers.

4 1b. Creating a teacher-made prompt
To use your own prompt to assign to students, you must first have an HMH Task Performance assigned. Then you can go in and edit the prompt to whatever you would like it to be.

5 2. The student works on the assignment.
After the teacher creates an assignment, the student uses myWriteSmart to: collaborate with peers or groups (if the teacher has enabled this feature) get teacher assistance or feedback before submission use one originality check (via Turnitin) to determine whether there is evidence of plagiarism before turning in the assignment

6 3. The student does an originality check.
To activate the originality check before submission, the student clicks Turnitin in the right-hand navigation panel and chooses Request a Check.

7 4. The student sees results of originality check.
Within minutes, the system returns a percentage of unoriginality. The student can select the percentage to view more details. Within myWriteSmart, the student can then revise the paper to avoid plagiarism before submitting to the teacher. NOTES The Turnitin check requires a little wait time. If the score does not appear within 30 seconds, slide the Turnitin panel in and out by clicking on Turnitin and a score should appear.

8 5. The student submits a performance task.
The student chooses Submit and then titles the essay, which is sent to the teacher for reviewing and grading.

9 6. From myWriteSmart dashboard, teacher is
6. From myWriteSmart dashboard, teacher is notified of a submission to action. The teacher selects the specific assignment, and then chooses the name from the Student List drop-down to view the submission. NOTES Assignments can also be accessed through the Assignments title on the Teacher Dashboard, however accessing the assignment directly from the myWriteSmart gadget avoids an unnecessary window.

10 7. The teacher evaluates the essay, with the help of Turnitin analysis.
The teacher selects Turnitin to view an originality percentage or e-rater to view feedback on grammar/usage/mechanics and a holistic score for trained prompts tied to digital writing collections. Clicking the percentage or e-rater button launches a Document Viewer with more information. NOTES Originality scores are expressed in percentage of unoriginal text. Selecting either the percentage or e-rater brings up the Document Viewer shown on the next slide. The Document Viewer is in a separate window outside of the myWriteSmart environment. No direct communication between student and teacher can take place in that window. All communication takes place in the myWriteSmart environment. Use your device’s viewer tray to toggle back and forth between open windows, if needed.

11 8. Teacher reviews info in the Document Viewer.
The default view is Originality Check, which shows percentage of matches against a database of original sources.

12 9. Teacher can mark up the essay with GradeMark.
In the GradeMark view, the teacher can use advanced tools to mark up the paper. The teacher can highlight and annotate text, delete/strikethrough text, record voice comments, or create custom QuickMarks for easier markup. As an alternative, the teacher can forgo these advanced tools and use the in-line/general commenting features in myWriteSmart for grading. NOTES If a Feedback button appears on the e-rater view, please note that it opens a new window that submits feedback to Turnitin—not the student. Both the PeerMark view at the top and the “– out of 100” score at the top right are inactive in the myWriteSmart version because they would duplicate actions taking place natively in myWriteSmart.

13 10. The teacher can also access ETS e-rater
10. The teacher can also access ETS e-rater feedback from the GradeMark view. Clicking ETS on the bottom navigation panel will bring up feedback on grammar, usage, and mechanics for ALL essays assigned through myWriteSmart. Feedback appears as purple highlights within the essay. If the essay is from a writing digital collection assessment, Turnitin will also return a holistic score here.

14 11. The teacher uses the rubric in myWriteSmart,
11. The teacher uses the rubric in myWriteSmart, along with the feedback from the Document Viewer to arrive at a score. Rubrics are available through the myWriteSmart Resources icon, not through the Document Viewer.

15 12. The teacher grades the paper in myWriteSmart
12. The teacher grades the paper in myWriteSmart When accepting the essay, she/he assigns a score. The student can view his/her grade from the student dashboard, or by clicking Assignments. Within the assignment itself, the student can select Turnitin to view the teacher’s feedback if she chooses to provide her comments within the Document Viewer, rather than in myWriteSmart. NOTES Any comments you have noted through the Document Viewer are not made visible to students until you Accept the student’s writing in myWriteSmart.
