1 Assignment #8 - Project Flow Chart Jack Melcher UEP-232
Paving Paradise: Shellfish Habitat Impacts on the North Shore of Massachusetts Assignment #8 - Project Flow Chart Jack Melcher UEP-232

2 Project Description Urbanization has been linked to declining water quality and ecosystem damage. This study will seek to relate land cover and land use characteristics in watersheds with impaired shellfish habitats.

3 Project Process Phase I: Watershed Delineation
Perform first for Ipswich Watershed. Source Data Formatted Data USGS DEM 30m USGS DEM 30m Watershed Geographic coordinate system Mass mainland Projected coordinate system Mass mainland Projected coordinate system Use Data Export to clip to area of interest Use Spatial Analysis tools to delineate Check against Ipswich watershed on MassGIS done Repeat for progressively smaller watersheds. Parker Essex  Rowley  Walter

4 Project Process Phase II: Percentage Impervious
For each watershed: Source Data MassGIS Impervious Raster – 2005 1m resolution Amount impervious Watershed Use zonal analysis

5 Project Process Phase III: Percent Developed Land
Use LUCODE 9 – Water Based Recreation 10 – Multi-family Residential 11 – High-density Residential 12 – Medium Density Residential 13 – Low Density Residential 15 – Commercial 16 – Industrial 17 - Transitional 18 – Transportation 31 – Urban Public / Institutional For each watershed: Source Data MassGIS Land Use Vector – 2005 Percent developed land Watershed Use clip function

6 Project Process Phase IV: Health of Ecosystems
For Oysters, Mussels, and Clams: (or a subset if these if I run out of time) Source Data Potential Shellfish Habitat Vector – 2008 Percentage impacted Designated Shellfish Growing Areas Areas are habitat but are not approved for harvest Vector Areas that have been approved to harvest shellfish Delineate study area assumed to be receiving inflow primarily from a single watershed of interest.

7 Project Process Phase V: Results
Could perform a regression… or maybe just some kind of nice display of interesting cases. Percent Impervious Phase II Conclusions Percent Developed Does impervious have a great effect than developed? Phase III Habitat Impairments Export to stats package and look for significance of impervious and developed as a predictor of habitat improvements Phase IV
