1 Ch 2.1 : Protozoa Animal Like
Presented by Mr.Mulligan, 7w Science

2 Protists Wide variety of organisms
One celled or multi-celled. Can be plant like, animal like, fungus like. May or may not contain chlorophyll Eukaryotes (have a nucleus)

3 Protozoa 1 cell and contains organelles No chlorophyll
times bigger than bacteria but still microscopic If Bacteria was the size of your shoe, Protozoa would be the size of a football field!

4 Protozoa

5 Where do they live? Oceans, fresh water and damp soil
In other organisms (parasites) They will feed on dead organisms, monerans or other protists.

6 What do they eat? Protozoa will feed on dead organisms, monerans or other protists.

7 4 Main Groups: Sarcodines Ciliates Flagellates Sporozoans
How do you think they were classified into these 4 groups?

8 Sarcodines Pseudopods = “false foot” Moves by changing shape
Traps food by making a vacuole around it For example: Amoeba

9 Ciliates Cilia = short, hairlike extensions Fastest moving protozoa
Like bumper cars: speed, bump into something, reverse direction Cilia help sweep food into ‘oral groove’ For example: Paramecium

10 Flagellates Long, whiplike flagella (pl.), flagellum (sing.)
Tend to be parasites in blood Some are good: help termite digest wood Some are bad: cause African sleeping disease For example: Euglena

11 Sporozoa Cannot move on their own Are all parasites
Malaria attacks red blood cells, reproduce and burst out of cells to infect another For example: Malaria
