1 Summary/Conclusions of the SuperB PID Sessions.
“Summary/Conclusion of SuperB PID Sessions 16 th Feb., 2008

2 “Summary/Conclusion of
This workshop has been a useful gathering – for the first time, really – of those who are interested, curious and/or committed to moving forward to design and then build a SuperB experiment in Italy. It will come as no surpize that we are short of people – we have few FTE’s to do the work that must be done ! One correction, when Evgeniy was preparing his slides for his introductory talk, I had removed Barcelona and Valencia from the masthead – but they are expecting to play a role this year, and we welcome them back. But we have begun to generate the list of tasks that should be done, and I am sure that among those that will eventually become the SuperB collaboration, these tasks will indeed be done ! “Summary/Conclusion of SuperB PID Sessions 16 th Feb., 2008

3 “Summary/Conclusion of
There is an enthusiastic group gathered as interested ‘PIDers’. Our job is to try to pull together a team that will work together, from those who show up. The jobs divide into activities concerning the core PID system – the Barrel system –, and activities to do with determining if there should be an End Cap, and the tasks that would have to be then done if we were to include such devices in our Superb detector. There were interesting reports of very nice work been done by our Superb team, and by those who are working towards a Belle upgrade device. Specifically, the focusing DIRC work, the BINP aerogel work, the beautiful electronic development at Hawaii and the aerogel and detector work in Slovenia. There are plans for evaluating new SiPMT’s at Padua and Barcelona, and developing a fast detector that may be interesting for TOF. “Summary/Conclusion of SuperB PID Sessions 16 th Feb., 2008

8 “Summary/Conclusion of
For each of the tasks we define, the PID group has to come up with answers to the following questions : * Who will work on it, with what kind of manpower ? * What is the definition of the work to be accomplished ? * What is the schedule and what are the deliverables ? * What is the estimated cost ? There are also specific tasks coming from other areas like Electronics, DAQ/Trigger and Computing. * We need to generate answers to those questions, too. There is some good news though – with so many, many tasks with no names currently attached, - and some do not require a lot of prior experience with PID systems, or even great technical expertise ! WHAT GREAT OPPORTUNITIES OUR SYSTEM HAS TO OFFER ! * Please take a ticket, and stand in line ! “Summary/Conclusion of SuperB PID Sessions 16 th Feb., 2008

9 “Summary/Conclusion of
For the Barrel – * we have to evaluate the sensitivity to backgrounds at the design luminosity, and determine if it is realistic to live with the base design of only replacing the current PMT’s in the current SOB, or to scale back to a smaller size of SOB, and faster PMT’s to give a margin against background hits. This requires simulation work, and calculations. Designing and building a new SOB may be an important new task. * developing the specifications for the replacement PMT’s, and characterizing and testing them is a central job. * designing and building the electronics for the new Barrel DIRC is yet another central job. “Summary/Conclusion of SuperB PID Sessions 16 th Feb., 2008

10 “Summary/Conclusion of
The Barrel continued, for the upgrade scenario :– * the design of the mechanics of a smaller SOB is a major task. * the design of the optics to focus light from the bar boxes onto a focal plane with minimal aberrations, is a central task. * specifications, testing and characterizing the pixilated photo- detectors for the focal plane is yet another major task. There is good, strong activity in this area. * design, testing and fabrication of the new electronics is a big task. * we need several people to work on urgent computing tasks requested by the central Computing group, and are having trouble identifying names within our group! “Summary/Conclusion of SuperB PID Sessions 16 th Feb., 2008

11 “Summary/Conclusion of
For the End Cap – * what physics will generate the case for required added reach of particle identification ? There needs to be someone working on this, or there will be no forward or backward PID sub-system. * along with generating a strong ‘pro’ case, we are also required to examine the ‘damage’ that such a system will bring on the physics performance of the whole Superb detector – i.e. extra material in front of the calorimeter, and geometry issues impacting other systems or hermiticity. * I would guess that the time scale for a decision on whether there should be such a system could be delayed until some time between summer and the end of next year. * A decision on the technology would be needed some time before the run up to writing the TDR, but it is likely that we will be in a position to make that choice, about the same time there is a decision on whether to have the extra PID coverage. “Summary/Conclusion of SuperB PID Sessions 16 th Feb., 2008

17 “Summary/Conclusion of
Goals for ELBA. Make progress on whether the base BARREL PID system NEEDS a smaller SOB ! [backgrounds; optics; PMT choices; mechanics ] * Make progress on addressing the needs of the Electronics, Computing and Data Acquisitions people. [names; specific jobs; connections] Make progress on assigning names of groups or individuals to the PID system questions. This is not solving any big questions for SuperB, but it would be a good and realistic set of goals for the next 12 to 14 weeks, for PID ! “Summary/Conclusion of SuperB PID Sessions 16 th Feb., 2008
