1 Teacher Guide This lesson is designed to teach kids to ask a critical thinking question that you can’t just put into a search box to solve. To do that, we encourage them with smaller questions that search can help them answer. Make sure that you read the notes for each slide: they not only give you teaching tips but also provide answers and hints so you can help the kids if they are having trouble. Remember, you can always send feedback to the Bing in the Classroom team at You can learn more about the program at bing.com/classroom and follow the daily lessons on our Partners In Learning site. Want to extend today’s lesson? Consider using Skype in the Classroom to arrange for your class to chat with another class in today’s location. And if you are using Windows 8, you can also use the Bing apps to learn more about this location and topic; the Travel and News apps in particular make great teaching tools. Alice Keeler is a mother of 5 and a teacher in Fresno, California. 3 How would you go about creating a 3D model of the crystal grotto?
In the mid-1700s, southwest of London, near the village of Cobham, the Honorable Charles Hamilton designed the gardens known as Painshill. The centerpiece of his creation is this crystal grotto. With a base and frame of brick, wood, and plaster, the surface of this above-ground cavern gleams and sparkles with hundreds of thousands of crystals, including quartz, fluorite, and calcite. After falling into disrepair during the 20th century, the crystal grotto was fully restored to its original splendor in 2013. While a hand-crafted cave may seem like a strange endeavor, it’s just one part of Hamilton’s achievement: a perfect example of the English landscape garden. Unlike the meticulously manicured formal gardens that became popular in France during the preceding centuries, the English landscape garden of the 1700s was meant to give the visitor a sense of being immersed in an idealized wilderness. Indeed, at the Painshill gardens, it’s easy to think that it all simply happened to grow this way, with the gardens echoing the natural flow of a true wilderness, even though they were all carefully engineered. Depending on time, you can either have students read this silently to themselves, have one of them read out loud, or read it out loud yourself.

4 How would you go about creating a 3D model of the crystal grotto?
1 Web Search What is a 3D printer? 2 Locate free 3D printing software that you can use to create a model of the crystal grotto. 3 What types of measurements would you need to obtain in order to create a model of the crystal grotto? 4 Thinking If you were to create a 3D model of the cave, which part of the cave would you construct? 5 How would modeling the crystal grotto help you to better learn about the cave? There are a couple of ways to use this slide, depending on how much technology you have in your classroom. You can have students find answers on their own, divide them into teams to have them do all the questions competitively, or have each team find the answer to a different question and then come back together. If you’re doing teams, it is often wise to assign them roles (one person typing, one person who is in charge of sharing back the answer, etc.)

5 How would you go about creating a 3D model of the crystal grotto?
5 Minutes You can adjust this based on how much time you want to give kids. If a group isn’t able to answer in 5 minutes, you can give them the opportunity to update at the end of class or extend time.

You can ask the students verbally or let one of them come up and insert the answer or show how they got it. This way, you also have a record that you can keep as a class and share with parents, others.

Web Search What types of measurements would you need to obtain in order to create a model of the crystal grotto? (Possible Search Queries: modeling 3D printer measurements, scaling with a 3d printer, creating a 3d model scale ) Sources Stratasys: Lynda: A photo is already a scale model of the cave. Students will need to measure the heights of the cones as well as taking the measurement of the slant. Students need to consider how to measure cured surfaces. Students will need to determine the proportions of the cones with the height of the cave.

10 How would you go about creating a 3D model of the crystal grotto?
4 Thinking If you were to create a 3D model of the cave, which part of the cave would you construct? Student answers will vary. Students should mention that there are different parts of the caves, they would need to pick one part of the cave that represents the elements of the cave.

11 How would you go about creating a 3D model of the crystal grotto?
5 Thinking How would modeling the crystal grotto help you to better learn about the cave? Student answers will vary. Students may mention how they have to spend more time with the smaller details of the cave to 3D model it and to have a better understanding of what the cave looks like.

12 How would you go about creating a 3D model of the crystal grotto?
This slide is a chance to summarize the information from the previous slides to build your final answer to the question.
