1 Iditarod By Andrew C.

2 Introduction The Iditarod started because there was a sickness in Nome so they made a race called the Iditarod. They brought medicine to the sick people.

3 Musher My mushers name is Nicolas Petit He’s in 3rd place
He’s in first place in my class Bib number 24

4 Dogs He used 13 dogs but they can start the race with 16.
Some dogs are part wolf and part dog All dogs need a coat and booties to protect themselves from the cold.

5 Checkpoints & Routes There are 17 checkpoints in this years race. The first in Anchorage and the last in Nome. On the southern route, there are 19 checkpoints. They start at Fairbanks They end at Nome. Miles: 998 = 2017 Southern Route (Odd years) Northern Route (Even Years)

6 Awards PenAir Spirit of Alaska Award- Presented to the first musher to reach McGrath GCI Dorothy G. Page Halfway Award- Presented to the first musher to reach the halfway checkpoint Wells Fargo Blank Alaska Gold Coast Award- presented to the first musher to “Gold Coast” community of Unalakleet. Red Lantern Award- presented to the last musher to finish the race.
