5 Holland or Netherlands?
The Netherlands is often referred to as Holland Nevertheless, the official name of the country is the (Kingdom of the) Netherlands. The Netherlands consists out of twelve provinces. Two of them, North and South Holland, are the two provinces that together make Holland. Due to the maritime and economic power of these provinces in the 17th century, the Netherlands became known worldwide as Holland. (Holland.com)

6 Dutch? In Old English dutch simply meant “people or nation.” (This also explains why Germany is called Deutschland in German.) Over time, English-speaking people used the word Dutch to describe people from both the Netherlands and Germany. (At that point in time, in the early 1500s, the Netherlands and parts of Germany, along with Belgium and Luxembourg, were all part of the Holy Roman Empire.) Specifically the phrase “High Dutch” referred to people from the mountainous area of what is now southern Germany. “Low Dutch” referred to people from the flatlands in what is now the Netherlands. The word “Netherlands” was used to describe people from the low-lying (nether) region (land). The term was so widely used that when they became a formal, separate country in 1815, they became the Kingdom of the Netherlands (dictionary.com, 2011)

7 Netherlands and Sea Level
The Netherlands' name literally means "Low Country” inspired by its low and flat geography, with only about 50% of its land exceeding one metre above sea level. Most of the areas below sea level are man-made. (Eupedia, 2014)

Children put their shoes in front of the fire place and wake up to have them filled with candies, chocolate and small toys. The night before children often put carrots or hay in their shoes for Sinterklaas’ horse (sound familiar?) He travels with his servants called 'Zwarte Pieten' ('Black Peters’) If children were bad, Zwarte Pieten would grab them, put them in a sack and take them to Spain or drown them in the river.
