1 Course name: Unit Planning Organization:Classroom
Course number: Course Staff: Firki by Teach For India Course Language: English

2 Overview of the Course Through this course, we will understand what a unit plan is, why do we consider it as a good curricular tool. Section 1- Feel: How do you currently plan for a unit of instruction? In this section, we will reflect on how we currently plan for a unit. We will also identify the need for preparing for unit of instruction. Section 2- Imagine: What makes an effective unit plan? We will identify the criteria of an effective unit plan and see what they look in action.

3 Overview of the Course Section 3- Do: How do I make an effective unit plan? We will follow the process of creating an effective unit plan. Section 4- Share: How do I share this message with other teachers? We will examine ways to share the process of creating a unit plan with other teachers around us. Section 5 – Evaluation: The course will end with a graded evaluation that will help check your understanding of the material. [Note: This course has many references to the Performance Task course. Please take the Performance Task course before you begin this.]

4 Learning Objectives Through this course, you will:
Examine the need to have a unit plan Identify the characteristics of an effective unit plan Follow the process to create an effective unit plan

5 How do I currently plan for a unit of instruction?

6 How do I currently plan for a unit of instruction?

7 How do I currently plan for a unit of instruction?
We conducted a survey with 53 teachers in Pune to understand why they plan for a unit of instruction. Here is what they had to say:

8 Gives clarity to my students on what they will be learning
Helps me understand how to achieve my end goal within a given time period. Gives clarity to my students on what they will be learning Helps me track progress Helps me break down my vision into small, achievable goals Gives me direction on what to teach, why to teach and how to teach such that my vision comes alive everyday Gives me clarity for my daily lesson plans and how to reach my long term goal Helps me organize myself as a teacher Creating a unit plan helps a teacher do all the above. It helps the teacher and his/her students get clarity on what to expect out of a unit and how it aligns to the long term goals of the class.

9 How do I currently plan for a unit of instruction?
We also asked the teachers what stops them from teaching effectively in the classroom. Here are what some of their responses looked like: When the kids don’t know previous topics well. Surprise Holidays When too much time is spent on correcting student behaviour When objectives take longer to master than expected Find it difficult to teach in an integrated way through all lessons Surprise school activities Let’s see in the next few slides how preparing a strong unit plan helps a teacher overcome these challenges better.

10 What makes an effective unit plan?
An effective unit plan has the following 5 elements: Having a clear outcome or goal Goal Having a way to assess the goal and knowing what success is Assessment Having a plan to get to the goal Plan Having timely milestones along the way to check your progress to the goal Checks for Progress Having the space to adapt and be flexible in response to progress Adaptive

11 What makes an effective unit plan?
Hi, I am a Grade 6 Math Teacher in XYZ School in Mumbai. We are going to begin our school year in a week from now. The first unit of instruction will start on 20th June and will end on 18th July. It’s great that I already made my Long Term Plan a month in advance. It really helped me plan my first unit of instruction. I already knew the goals that I am working towards and the chapters to cover in order to achieve those goals. The chapters I covered in this Unit Plan are: Basic Concepts in Geometry Angles I am so excited to share my unit plan with you! Look for how I used the 5 elements of planning (i.e. Goal, Assessment, Plan, Check for Progress and Adaptive) in this plan.

12 Here is what we mean by Communication, Collaboration and Reflection:
What makes an effective unit plan? Having a clear outcome or goal Goal By the end of the Unit, The students of Grade 6 will score a 3 on the Performance Task scale on Communication, Collaboration and Reflection. Here is what we mean by Communication, Collaboration and Reflection:

13 What makes an effective unit plan?
Having a way to assess the goal and knowing what success is Assessment The following Performance Task will help me assess whether my students, at the end of the unit, can fully demonstrate communication, collaboration and reflection: Refer to the course on Performance Task to understand how this performance task is Giving opportunities to students to demonstrate communication, collaboration and reflection Using the concepts of Math to build the final product i.e. an ideal city model

14 What makes an effective unit plan?
Having a plan to get to that goal Plan To get to my vision, I will effectively plan for i) Content ii) Instructional Strategies iii) Classroom Culture

15 Chapter 1: Basic Concepts in Geometry
What makes an effective unit plan? You will see me plan for CONTENT here. Content means the chapters I will be covering in a unit for a given subject area. In this part, I have broken down my Math chapters into smaller achievable parts called as the objectives. Chapter 1: Basic Concepts in Geometry SWBAT identify and define a point, line, line segment and ray SWBAT draw a design model with the help of a point, line, line segment and ray SWBAT identify a plane and write down its characteristics SWBAT identify and classify lines as parallel or intersecting and recognize them in immediate observation SWBAT identify collinear and non collinear points on a plane and recognize them in immediate environment

16 What makes an effective unit plan?
Chapter 2: Angles SWBAT identify, classify the angles as acute, obtuse or right and measure them using a protractor (Revision) SWBAT identify and classify straight, reflex or complete angles SWBAT identify and classify different types of angles in real life. SWBAT draw different types of angles using a protractor SWBAT draw an angle bisector using a compass SWBAT construct an angle equal in measure to a given angle, using compass and ruler

17 What makes an effective unit plan?
Now, I am thinking about the INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES I will be using to build communication, collaboration and reflection in my students. Instructional strategies are approaches that teachers take to increase student learning opportunities. An instructional strategy, therefore, must be aligned to the content being taught and the skills being built in the classroom.

18 What makes an effective unit plan?
Goals for Unit 1 Which instructional strategy will I use to build this? How do these instructional strategies help my students reach their goals for Unit 1? Communication Think- Pair-Share Click here to know more about Think-Pair-Share Students' learning is enhanced when they have many opportunities to elaborate on ideas through talk. The think, pair, share strategy increases the kinds of personal communications that are necessary for students to internally process, organize, and retain ideas Collaboration Reflection K-W-L Chart A KWL charts tracks what a student knows (K), wants to know (W) and has learnt about a topic (L) about a topic. It helps a student synthesize and make effective connections between what they are learning

19 What makes an effective unit plan?
And finally, I am thinking about CLASSROOM CULTURE structures that will help build communication, collaboration and reflection in my students. Classroom Culture structures are additional spaces created in the plan for students to practice the desired skills and mindsets. We can have daily, weekly or monthly structures, depending upon the amount of time we have in a unit.

20 What makes an effective unit plan?
Goals for Unit 1 Which structure(s) will I use to build this? How do these structures help my students reach their goals for Unit 1? How often will I use this structure(s)? Communication Morning Meeting AND Closing Circle (To learn more about Morning Meetings and Closing Circles, please complete the Firki Course on Building Reflection in Students) Daily Collaboration Reflection Morning Meeting Closing Circle

21 What makes an effective unit plan?
I have 2 daily structures i.e. Morning Meeting and Closing Circle in my plan to help students practice communication, collaboration and reflection. However, these structures are not giving sufficient opportunities to my students to reflect on who they are as a person. Therefore, to enable depth in reflection, I will also have a Sharing Circle once in a month. This sharing circle will also have spaces to practice communication and collaboration along with reflection, thereby helping us reach our goals.

22 What makes an effective unit plan?
Goals for Unit 1 Which structure(s) will I use to build this? How do these structures help my students reach their goals for Unit 1? How often will I use this structure(s)? Communication Sharing Circle (To learn more about Sharing Circles, please complete the Firki Course on Sharing Circles) Monthly (Once in a month) Collaboration Reflection

23 What makes an effective unit plan?
I will now calendar the objectives I created from 20th June to 18th July. As I am calendaring you will see me allocate time towards: What makes an effective unit plan? Having timely milestones along the way to check your progress to the goal. We can do this by having weekly assessments every Friday. Checks for Progress Having the space to adapt and be flexible in response to progress. We can do this by having a reteach, remediate and revise block every Saturday. Adaptive

24 What makes an effective unit plan?
Other factors I will keep in mind while calendaring are: What makes an effective unit plan? School Holidays (Second Saturdays, Sundays, any other festival holiday) School Meeting (Staff Meetings, Parent Teacher Meeting) Buffer Time for Surprise Holiday, Surprise Activities in School Classroom Structures like the Morning Meeting, Closing Circle, Sharing Circle etc. On the next slide you will see what my Unit Plan looks like from 20 June to 18 July

31 How do I make an effective Unit Plan?
STEP 1: List down your Goals for this unit STEP 2: Design an assessment that will help you assess the goal at the end of the unit STEP 3: Plan for Content, Instructional Strategies and Culture that will help you reach your goal STEP 4: Calendar the plan! Let’s now explore each of these in detail! Please note: You will come across various templates in this section to help you create a unit plan. Therefore, have a notebook and pen/pencil with you. How do I make an effective Unit Plan?

32 How do I make an effective Unit Plan?
STEP 1: List down your goals for this Unit. How do I make an effective Unit Plan? You can use the example below for reference: All students of Grade 6, will be a 3 on Communication, Collaboration and Reflection on the Performance Task Scale. Write down your goal in your notebook. ______________________________________________________________________________________________

33 How do I make an effective Unit Plan?
STEP 1: List down your goals for this Unit. Now explain what Communication, Collaboration and Reflection would look like in action in your class. How do I make an effective Unit Plan? You can use the example below for reference: GOAL under Academic Achievement A statement explaining how the GOAL will look like in action.

34 How do I make an effective Unit Plan?
STEP 1: List down your goals for this Unit. How do I make an effective Unit Plan? Draw the table give below in your notebook and explain your goals in it:

35 How do I make an effective Unit Plan?
STEP 2: Design an assessment that will help you assess the goal at the end of the unit How do I make an effective Unit Plan? Refer to this handout or the course on Performance Task to design this assessment. Draw the table given below in your notebook and write down your final assessment in it. Goal Role Audience Situation Product or Performance Standards or Criteria for Success

36 How do I make an effective Unit Plan?
STEP 3: Plan for Content, Instructional Strategies and Culture that will help you reach your goal Let’s begin by planning for CONTENT List down the chapters you will be teaching in this unit. You can refer to your LTP to get this information. Note: Draw the table given below in your notebook and fill it for all subjects you teach within a standard. If you teach more than one standard, then repeat the same process to make Unit Plans for different standard. Standard Subject Name of the chapters

37 How do I make an effective Unit Plan?
Let’s break the chapters into objectives Name of the chapter: Objective 1 Objective 2 Objective 3 Objective 4 Objective 5 Objective 6 Objective 7 Name of the chapter: Objective 1 Objective 2 Objective 3 Objective 4 Objective 5 Objective 6 Objective 7

38 How do I make an effective Unit Plan?
Now, let’s plan for INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES. RECAP: Instructional strategies are approaches that teachers take to increase student learning opportunities. An instructional strategy, therefore, must be aligned to the content being taught and the skills being built in the classroom. For example- if I want students to demonstrate communication by the end of the unit, I will give them opportunities to do Think-Pair-Share regularly in the classroom.

39 How do I make an effective Unit Plan?
Fill in this table to plan for Instructional Strategies in your notebook. Goals for Unit 1 Which instructional strategy will I use to build this? How do these instructional strategies help my students reach their goals for Unit 1?

40 How do I make an effective Unit Plan?
And finally let’s plan for CLASSROOM CULTURE STRUCTURES. RECAP: Classroom Culture structures are additional spaces created in the plan for students to practice the desired skills and mindsets. For example- if I want students to demonstrate collaboration by the end of the unit, I will add Morning Meetings and Closing Circles as structures in addition to my daily lessons for students to practice collaboration.

41 How do I make an effective Unit Plan?
Fill in the table below to identify relevant classroom culture structures in your notebook.. It’s good to have a mix of daily, weekly, fortnightly structures in your unit plan for students to practice the stated goals. Goals for Unit 1 Which structure(s) will I use to build this? How do these structures help my students reach their goals for Unit 1? How often will I use this structure(s)? (Daily/ Weekly/ Fortnightly/Monthly)

42 How do I make an effective Unit Plan?
STEP 4: Calendar the plan! When you calendar your objectives allocate time for all of the following: Checks for Progress i.e. Weekly Assessments Adaptive i.e. Reteach, Remediate and Revise School Holidays (Second Saturdays, Sundays, National Holidays) School Meetings (Staff Meetings, Parent Teacher Meetings etc) Buffer days for surprise holidays and surprise school activities Classroom Culture Structures

43 Chapter name and number
How do I make an effective Unit Plan? Write time to teach each subject here Use this template to calendar your plan. Write the day and date here. Time Subject Chapter name and number Calendar second last day to conduct weekly assessment. Calendar last day to reteach, remediate and revise. Calendar time for teaching objectives for all days of the week except the last two days.

44 How do I make an effective Unit Plan?
Let’s reflect independently now. Draw this table in your notebook. Put a tick if the component exists and cross if it is not present in my unit plan. I have GOALS across the Student Vision Scale in my unit plan. I have a way to assess my goals at the end of the unit I have broken down my chapters into objectives I know the instructional strategies I will use to bring the goals alive

45 How do I make an effective Unit Plan?
I know the structures I will include in my unit plan to bring the goals alive I have allocated time towards weekly assessment I have time allocated to reteach, remediate and revise every week I have calendared all my objectives and structures for the unit I have calendared time for school holidays, school meetings and left buffer time for surprise events.

46 How do I make an effective Unit Plan?
Let’s pause for a minute now.

48 How can we share this message with others around us?:

49 How can we share this message with others around us?:
Here are other suggestions to spread the message of unit planning in classrooms. Organise a party at the beginning of each unit for all teachers to design a unit plan for their own classrooms. Take a workshop for other teachers in your school based on this Firki Course. These are suggestions. You can spread the message in any way you feel comfortable.
