2 Year 10 Thermal Physics Test
G:\Departments\Science\Physics\KS4\4. Thermal Physics\New Resources\Assessments\Year 10 Thermal Physics Test Mark Scheme.pptx

3 Answering multiple mark questions.
Some questions have 4 -6 marks for your written answer. DON’T PANIC! Read the question first, then underline the command word make sure you know what it is asking and how many marks are available. There will most likely be one mark for one point. Be scientific, don’t waffle!

4 Long Answer – 5 marks When ice melts, describe and explain what happens to the temperature of the ice. Describe – recall some facts, events, processes in an accurate way. Explain – make something clear or state the reasons for something happening. The points must be logically and coherently linked. Now complete ‘The story of ice’ choosing the best path to create an answer for this question.

5 (molecules) close together / touching / strong forces holding molecules together [1]
(molecules) vibrate / are not free to move around [1]

6 temperature (of wax) increases (as time increases) [1]
between 4 and 8 minutes the temperature stays the same [1] because the wax is melting (between 4 and 8 minutes) [1] temperature increases again / after 8 minutes [1] wax has all melted / is all liquid (after 8 minutes) [1]

7 6 mark question Car bodies, bicycle frames and many other objects are painted using an electrostatic spray gun. Explain how this system works and the advantages of using this method. 6 marks Key words – Explain (make something clear or state the reasons for something happening) Advantages – What are the advantages (more than one) of using this system Write down the key scientific points you wish to make? There should be 6. Include 2 advantages.

8 Answers The paint is given a charge of static electricity [1]
The droplets of paint spread out evenly because they all have the same charge [1] The object being painted is given the opposite charge [1] The paint is attracted to it because of this opposite charge. [1] Less paint is wasted / an even coverage of paint is achieved / less messy as paint doesn’t drip / saves money as less paint is wasted (ANY 2)
