Comparative Study of Synthesis of Magnetic and Activated Carbon Binary Composites through different Synthetic method and their Characterization Shakeel Ahmad Khan*1, Sammia Shahid1 1. Department of Chemistry, School of Science and Technology, University of Management and Technology Lahore Pakistan *Corresponding author: Introduction Nanomagnetic particles have attracted increasing interest in recent years at both academic and technical fronts due to their large surface to volume ratio. Especially nanomagnetic particles have useful properties like spin canting, surface anisotropy, super paramagnetism etc. Magnetite (MG) decorated activated carbon (AC) type composite adsorbent (ACMG) with multifunctionality find promising applications in different field’s viz. water purification, magnetic catalytic support or enzymatic bioreactors and for suppression of electromagnetic interference. AC is widely used in water filtration systems for purification purpose in domestic and industry. The Current comparisons give comprehensive data about different synthetic method for the synthesis of Magnetic and Activated Carbon composites. The structural, morphological and magnetic properties of ACMG samples were investigated by powder XRD, FTIR, VSM, SEM and TEM techniques. Experimental Measurements 1. In this research, magnetic composites were prepared by taking different concentrations of kerosene based ferrofluid of MG for a given weight of AC, mixing them followed drying to remove the kerosene leaving behind dry MG particles over AC particles. Magnetic composites are characterized by (Barala et al., 2013). 2. In this synthetic method, composites such as Magnetite (Fe3O4), nanoscale acicular Goethite (α-FeOOH) and activated carbon-based magnetic composites was prepared by using methods shown by (Berger et al., 1999) and (Kwon et al., 2014) respectively. In this experiment, these composites are characterized (Kwon et al., 2014). 3. In this research experiment, magnetic composites (g-Fe2O3, Fe3O4) prepared from a suspension of activated carbon and FeSO4. Characterization was done by applying different characterization techniques (Oliveira et al., 2002). Comparison of Results SEM Results of Method 1, Method 2, & Method 3. 1. SEM of magnetite Decorate activated carbon composite. XRD Results of Method 1, Method 2 & Method 3 2. SEM of Fe3O4, α-FeOOH, carbon-based magnetic composites. 1. XRD pattern of activated carbon and magnetite decorated activated carbon. 3. SEM of (a) activated carbon / Fe oxide composite, (b) detail of the composite, (c) pure Fe oxide and (d) pure activated carbon. 3. XRD pattern for activated carbon and magnetite Fe oxide Composite and pure Fe oxide. Comparison of Interpretations of SEM Results of Method 1, Method & method 3 MG loaded AC based composites (ACMGs) materials with combination of porosity and magnetic character produced by method 1, 2 and 3 have size range in 8-10nm, 10-30nm and 5-7nm respectively. Conclusion Comparative study shows the formation of MG loaded AC based composites materials produced by method 1, 2 and 3 but method 3 have more importance because this involve the formation of MG composites by using low cost chemicals and they have more adsorption capacity, also have smaller diameter as compared to other composites produced by Method 1 and 2.
