4 FIRST CONDITIONAL USE: -Probable events -Promises or warnings
IF + SIMPLE PRESENT, FUTURE (WILL) USE: -Probable events -Promises or warnings Possible changes (particle): UNLESS: If you don´t come to work, you won´t get money Unless you come to work, you won´t get money. Possible changes (verb tenses): -Imperative (e.g. If you need some help, phone me!) -A modal verb (e.g. If you need some help, you must/may/can phone me

5 SECOND CONDITIONAL USE: -Hypothetical /Improbable events -Advice
IF + SIMPLE PAST, WOULD + INFINITIVE USE: -Hypothetical /Improbable events -Advice Bear in mind: If + I/he/she/it + WERE (=advice) If I were you, I would speak frankly about that Possible changes (verb tenses): -A modal verb (e.g. If you needed some help, you could/might phone me

THIRD CONDITIONAL IF + PAST PERFECT, WOULD HAVE + PAST PARTICIPLE USE: -Hypothetical /Impossible (to change) past events Possible changes (verb tenses): -A modal verb (e.g. If you had trained harder, you could/might have won the race

7 MIXED CONDITIONALS They are usually a combination of 2nd and 3rd conditional, but other combinations are possible. We use them when the time reference in the conditional clause is different from the result clause e.g. If Emma wasn’t so lazy, she’d have worked harder for her exam If he hadn’t spent all his money, he wouldn’t be poor now

8 MIXED CONDITIONALS They are usually a combination of 2nd and 3rd conditional, but other combinations are possible. We use them when the time reference in the conditional clause is different from the result clause e.g. If Emma wasn’t so lazy, she’d have worked harder for her exam If he hadn’t spent all his money, he wouldn’t be poor now
