2 Web search engines Search engine – software program that searches internet databases for user-specified information Keyword – a word that appears on a web page and is used by search engines to identify relevant URLs There are 3 ways to register a web site with a search engine The <meta> tag Spiders Manual registration Search engine vs. Information portal

The engine displays a list of categories and subcategories that you can browse Keyword Search You enter one or more keywords into the engine, or you can manually navigate an index’s structured directory using an information portal
