1 Data Collection and Problem Solving
Exploring Computer Science – Lesson 2-1

2 Objectives The student will be able to:
Recognize various forms of communication as data exchange. Describe the implications of data exchange on social interactions. Consider privacy of data that they create. Explain the difference between data used for making a case and data that informs a discovery. Describe good research questions.

3 Data Journals Compare your data journals with an elbow partner
Write down 5 ways that you give off data

4 Questions What would these data sources tell us about ourselves if we “aggregated” or collected these data from lots of people? What good might be done? What services might be improved? Which of these ways can the data be linked directly back to you? What are possible implications of the data being linked back to you?

5 Report on an Article On a paper (to turn in) put your name, date and block. Choose one of the 2 articles on next two slides and answer the 2 questions. Be sure to write name of the article on your paper.

6 Article 1 Read the article “A Face Is Exposed for AOL Searcher No ” What did AOL do to try and protect the privacy of the users that were included in the data? Why didn’t that protect privacy? How did they find Thelma Arnold? Why was this data available to the public?

7 Article 2 Read this article “How Privacy Vanishes Online”: How and why do people give away their information? How did Carnegie Mellon researchers guess people’s Social Security numbers? Why aren’t setting your privacy settings enough to protect you?

8 Rest of Today Read the article and answer the questions. Turn in your paper on your way out.
